I thought I show how to do the water in here cause it does not belong in the VSF category. Here is picture of my table and you can see how the water was done.
Very cheap and very effectiv.

and voila the ocean

And now comes the good idea!
I cut MDF tiles in different shapes, sand them, put sand and static flock on them and they look like this

Combine them and voila Beach Front property

or combine them differently and you have got a river

What do you think guys? Cost was minimal and the work ...well i happen to know a carpenter who was throwing all these MDF tiles away...got them for free

Very clever!

I like your modular terrain over your water layer. That's a great way to get rivers that don't look like they're sitting on the land.

Now that is an effective way of trash recycling, well done darquebus.
Could You tell us a little bit more about the ship on the second picture?

   Even I could manage that water effect

Wher did you get the cloth from?  I bet you'll now depress me by saying it's really common in Australia, but unavailable to the rest of the world......

I've seen some decent blue fabric at a local  store, but nothing with that sort of pattern.

cheers,
Ian

Well, the fabric was just a lucky find.
I had to spend around 12 hours in a craft shop looking after my daughter  while my wife was looking for some stuff (well it felt like 12 hours   )
And on a bargain table I saw this fabric for a couple of bucks and bought it.
The plastic is from a DIY store, comes in different thickness and I bought a relatively thin sheet cause it wrinkles "better"

Moral:
So what do you learn from this...if you have to spend time at a boring store because your wife takes you there, it might turn out to be worthwhile

or...a war gamer can find good things in even the most unlikely of places

Yes the ship is from the Mega Block line
http://www.megabloks.com/en/kids/pirates/index.php

When the Pirates of the Caribbean hype was over they where all sold for around $30-40 at local toy store. These are the bigger older models, I think the new ones are smaller..at least what is now on the website looks slightly different...

So I figured that rebuilding and repainting them was a very good idea...and they turned out fantastic. All the bits and pieces I didn't need I gave to the neighbors kids, got rid of the little knobs (cut them off) and put cardboard planking (bought in a store for architecture students) on top...and voila! We had some entertaining pirate battles with these ships. I bought also the flying dutchman, but it is more for fantasy battles. The chinese ship is great for any period from medieval to pulp. And the have the right scale and are all ready 'waterlined'

oh and another tip: I used rubber bands for the shrouds, its easier to put minis on deck
