The Wilkinsons one (at least in the shop nearest me) is too big, suitable for 40mm or 54mm high figures.

Although, in pictures, it appears to be the same as posted in earlier threads it is a bigger version.

I already have one of the smaller ones (Fastlane from Toys'R'Us) that I brought back last time I was in the USA that cost $12. This set has the engine, coaltruck, 2 carriages, open truck and tanker.

Fastlane... thats the one!!! My pach had actually an "extra" box attached to it with 10 straight tracks, quite useful as the original set had only 2 straight tracks

I didn't modify anything, it is pretty much straight out of the box....except the gun carriage which was the tanker - just took the tank off and replaced it with the gun and a few sandbags and an ammo crate. And of course new paint job

Hmm, that appears to be similar to the Western Express one that our local Toys R Us has. A friend checked it out & reckons it is too big but at $20 for a train, tender, coach & convertible tankers, it seems good value. A spray of matt black undercoat, a wash & it fits Africa to a T for early trains. Just read a book by Frank Coates which tells the story of Ewart Stuart Grogan, an early explorer (after Rhodes who he served with), very interesting on his time leading up to & including WW1.

My Friend Khartoum just got the wilkinsons one.

We reckon its maybe a bit big. The wheels seem to be where the major issues are i.e. they push the size right up from the tracks. The carriages etc.. don't seem too bad (he says thinking about the last time he stood next to a steam train and carriages).

But for a tenner its good value and if you, as he is going to , use plastic card etc... to convert it Ithink it will make  a good objective for a game.

Other trains I've seen advertised go for £120 for similar stuff. I can forgoe some scale for that price differntial.

I have not seen a fastlane one yet in the flesh need to get to toys r us.

Cheers

About 3 or 4 years ago British Home Stores had one for big boys toys which retailed at £15, it was a christmas stocking filler and is pretty good?
