Roofing advice for a Freight office
« on: July 04, 2011, 06:58:39 AM »
I began this project before thinking about how I would make the roof. I have posted some pictures so you can see what I'm working with. Does any one have any tips advice(mathematical formulas even?)  For building an L shaped roof.

I'd just take all the measurements and test it with some bits of cheap card first before cutting out the actual bits. Bear in mind you'll have a nice triangular piece for rhe corner  ;)

Can't see the pictures due to iffy Internet but I would suggest drawing out elevations and plans of what you want to do (obviously using a straight edge and doing it to scale), then you can adjust to whatever looks right.

Also drawing a section would be helpful for internal structure and angles etc.

Most modern roofs are designed by CAD which does the maths and spits out the instructions by magic.  Small projects can be drawn up by hand and dimensions and angles calculated using abook called a roofing ready reckoner which you might be able to find in the library

If you want to put in rafters, trusses etc, it's a question of scaling down the dimesnions to fit your model.
Have you seen the rivets on that?

I'll second the suggestion with the card-pre-roof. In my opinien, the best You can do - every other solution seem to end in 3dimensional moebius-line-brain-knots of some mathematical sort (hehe)

Start with simple paper, though it is sloppy it will give You a frst impression, what trouble You will have to face later. For example, Your roof is not only L-shaped, but also a higher wall (as You might have noticed ^^) on the "outer rim" - that side will give You nightmares. ;D

After that, I would use some paper-cartonage ... easy to cut, no loss when making mistakes, but stabile enough to be used as a platform for printing the later final stages.

Thanks for the tips so far guys. I knew somewhere deep down I shouldn't have tried to be clever and made it square.  I'm predicting a frustrating evening ahead  lol

Ok solved. But by cheating. I made a pitched roof for each wing and a flat roof for the centre area. Still the flat area will make a great sniping spot for a sneaky cowbow.
