Roman Legionaires (Warlord Games)

Next to my fantasy, sci-fi and other dubious project I've been known to sometimes dabble a bit with more serious projects.

Enter the Roman Legionairs:






These guys are from Warlors Games. I also have a unit of 16 guys from wargames factory, waiting to be photographed. Together with 5 auxiliary cavalery, a decent start for a Roman army.*

Nice job. Although your Centurion should be leading from the front. 

The Warlord Romans are 'Early Imperial' so about 15 BC to AD 200 give or take a few years.

The Wargames Factory Romans are 'Late Republican' so about 100 BC to 0 BC.

I have some WF Romans I'm going to add to my Warlord army too.

Aah thanks! I read somewhere that they were sometimes position on the rear of the unit to keep the legionaires in position and give commands from the back, but for the life of me, I can't find that information anymoe, so I'll move him to the front

Centurion front rank on the extreme right of the line. Signifer in the centre of the formation (not in the front rank according to Vegetius, you don't want Johnny Barbarian running off with your precious, holy standard - but apparently standard bearers did fight in the front line a lot despite this).

Behind the rear rank you have the Optio, Cornicen and Tesserarius to encourage from the back, push reluctant legionaries forward, and stop those who have lost their bottle from running off.


Great looking unit. Love it. Really should finish painting my Romans some day.
