Chaos! Nurgle. C&C wanted!
« on: August 20, 2011, 02:01:57 PM »
Painted em years ago as a speed painted chaos army. Have 18 metals still boxed and I want to improve my finished product!
Come on all you nurgle players. HELP!

Not bad for a speed painted army.

But somehow the dirty, rotting feel of a nurgle army doesn't really show. Also the lively green grass on the bases doesn't match with the Lord of Decay.

I think the colors are perfect, but they appear to have been drybrushed.  I think doing dark shading with washes and then doing softer, blended highlights will make them more organic-looking.  The highlighting on these seems very sharp-edged, which doesn't match up with the blobby, oozing look that plague marines should have.

I think those are perfect for a tabletop force. I would happily both game and display those.

While a dark wash may draw the colours together, it will also darken/mute the entire mini a lot, as they are already quite gloomy, so quite some work will be required after that.

Why not leave as is for now, and maybe expand the force with new models from the box where you take an different approach to painting them? If your results get much better, then when you have finished the force, you can consider what to do with the old ones (improve paintjob, strip and do over, leave as be).

Or you could try applying subtle hightlights to edges/raised areas that has not gotten them yet? Especially some of the metal bits are a bit dull as is.

You could do a glow type red eye effect to give them a splash of colour. Also i have found the problem with nurgle is with all the rotting browns, greens and greys they make rather drab models. The bases could use some Nurgling up though. Maybe some slime on the bases, or rotting corpses, dead grass instead or green stuff and some rocks as well.

Bases have never been my strong point.
I shall try to do a better job with the next lot. All advice taken on board!  :D
These were a strange mixture of a black u.coat, scrubbed with gretchin green, drybrushed with rotting flesh then washed with devlan. Went over raised areas in gg+rf then washed with sepia.
I needed 14 done in one evening and I was ok with them but thought it would be nice to have a unit painted well.
I shall have anudder go.
(also got the fw nurgle dread) ages ago, no more gw product for me. Except washes.

Love to see that one when you finally get it done. Love the FW stuff, too bad it's so damned expensive.

They have - I use them as objective/encounter markers for a sub-terranean Egyptian temple in a pulp game.... to be finished... some day...  :)

Myabe lighten them up with highlights/drybrushing first Rotting Flesh then Bleached Bone onto them. I like yellow eyes for Nurgly stuff. All my  Plaguemarines and Plaguebearers have yellow eyes.

Here's a pic of one of my Plaguemarines. I basecoat Rotting Flesh, medium/heavy wash Devlan Mud, highlight Rotting Flesh again, then drybrush Bleached Bone. They look really good as a unit. Also rebased since this pic was taken. They're on grey wasteland bases now. Fallout 3 style.
