Winter!!! 120 cm x 120 cm
« on: September 09, 2011, 08:33:25 AM »
Hi,
I think with a cooler weather outside it's time to show you all my winter table.
I made it in one weekend using only basics.

Thanks for the comments!

As a matter of fact I don't play Warhammer any more... But WM/Hordes is quite good to play on this kind of table as well.

Let me translate the how to make this table:

What to buy:
OSB-board 1cm strength
Selitron (insulation to use behind wallpapers)
brown acrylic paint (cheap from do it yourself shop)
white acrylic paint (cheap from do it yourself shop)
wood glue

Cut the OSB board to two parts of 60x120cm each. Be careful to leave tongue and groove in place as they are needed to put the parts together. Don't measure them either.
To make the road cut the selitron in a wave-like form in halves, pull those halves apart as far as you want the road to be. Then cut the selitron to fit the edges ob the boards. Be careful to have the roads on the two boards fit together in this moment. (Mark the board!)

Glue the selitron onto the board using wood glue, fix it with something heavy and leave to dry at least 12 hours.
Glue a fine layer of sand to the road.
In the meantime find a broken piece of concrete that you think has an interesting structure. I will be used for stamping the ground structure into the selitron after the dry period is over.
To stamp just use the  concrete as a hammer. You ca get rid of many aggressions while doing that.

If that is done, all of the board is painted with a mix of 1 part wood glue, 1 part brown acrylic paint plus 1 to three parts water.
Leave to dry thoroughly again.
Drybrush in plain white to do the frosty look as you see fit.

Snow is done using baking soda and wood glue.
If you like and want the table to be more durable, you can add a coat of clear matt varnish.

time used netto: about 4 hours of work
time it took: 1 weekend friday night to sunday afternoon

Greetings

GS

A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

Nice board! :-*

Never heard of Selitron. Will have to check that out.

Is it readily available at DIY stores and roughly how much does it cost?

Thanks!

Selitron is a brand, look out for insulation foam. It's roughly the same as pink foam used by many scenery builders.
Cost depends, but I got it a year ago for appr. 3,5 Euros the square meter at 3mm strength. Take the white stuff as it doesn't have the closed surface.

It took me awhile to overcome my aversion to Winter in general & snow in particular, but, be that as it may, you did a FANTASTIC job capturing the look & feel of a Winter scene in all its bone chilling yuckiness. VERY WELL DONE!
