Reading Hail Caesar, some remarks.
« on: September 14, 2011, 02:26:32 PM »
Hi Laffers, I'd like to share some thoughts while reading Warlord's Hail Caesar, if anyone is already familiar with it, I'd like him to drop a line.

- Basing: oh, yes, plenty of freedom, no strict code. Things are good as players agree that. I'm happy I'm not a tournament player.
- Moving: no wheeling? I'm wondering what's the feel of so much freedom of movement!

Overall by now: a ruleset written by a team of seasoned players, with seasoned players as market target. No over-ruling, and everything well expressed in meta-language too (i.e.: "we wrote this and that rule to help you in gaming terms in this and that way").

I've been bashing about with Hail Caesar all summer. So far I'm impressed (and I'd previously spent a good 12 years developing my own set of rules).
I like the flexible basing. I like the fast flowing mechanics.

The lack of tight movement rules is IMO a good thing and helps the game flow along. The proximity rule is key however to keep people from doing 'Weasel Moves' and sliding around flanks to get a sudden flank attack.

Thanks for the comment! Now I re read those pages I understand why you say the proximity rule is balancing the free turning.

Another question:

- Evading foot skirmishers: aren't they quite easily reached even by heavier troops who just manage to get more actions than the evading ones?

Yes, IF the heavies start their charge close enough and the IF the evading Lights roll crap for their command roll and only get one move.

But if you've got supporting heavies of your own a move behind (like you should) them then the chargers will contact those instead.

Kind of find these rules very good, we had our own WOR rules cus the rest were crap !  now it seems everybody at the club has moved towards these rules, brilliant for large games and getting a result in a 3-4 hour game...love em.
The Victorian Outpost

Its a new gaming place in Grimsby with new terrain and new scenery, lots of respect for all wargamers and is the best place to game in town.

Anybody who wishes to visit the venue to arrange a game then  just pm me and lets roll those dice.

I like them and the style of play that they offer. Fun and fair (as long as the people playing are fair  :) ).

I think some people are having a hard time getting to grips with the freeform style of the rules but I personally think this is a better way to play games of this type.

Currently rebasing some of my samurai and painting new ones for 40's by 40's  :D

We use these at the club now. Our 15mm units are all DBX based so we use the suggested frontages in the book (3 base frontages). We tend to make up the "standard" 28mm frontages on the night.

Hi, James. How have you extended the rules to cover samurai? What are you doing for army lists or the equivalent? Thanks!
