"6 units were purchased in September 16, 1921 so as to form a armored battery*. These units were sent to Morocco the 28 February 1922, being the first Spanish tanks engaged in combat the 14th of March. This unit worked with the Renault FT17 tank company in the Rif War but were not incorporated into the tank company in 1929. None of these tanks were ever lost in battle. After the war in Morocco they came back to the Peninsula in 1929 where they were kept in the Army depots. Some of them were available and used in 1936 during the early days of the Civil War."

At least one belonging to the Regimento Naval num 1 was used in Toledo and took part in the assaults against Alcazar.

Gotta love the Schneider! Although I´m a bit surprised by the light grey tone, weren´t pre-SCW spanish tanks a dark grey-green with mottled darker blotches? But don´t hold me to it. It´s a lovely model either way and could easily pass off as a makeshift armoured tractor cobbled together by the Revolutionary Committee of Solidaric Railroad Workers. Or something like that.

"Although I´m a bit surprised by the light grey tone, weren´t pre-SCW spanish tanks a dark grey-green with mottled darker blotches?"

In the Rif that pattern was used, but after being moved back to the mainland they were repainted.  Pictures show this in I think  "The Siege Of The Alcazar: A History Of The Siege Of The Toledo Alcazar 1936 by Geoffrey McNeill-Moss", I've got a couple books on Alcazar so I'll have to post again after I get to look at them to find the specific book.  Also look in "Las Armas de Guerre Civil en Espana" printed for the 70th anniversary for the Spanish Civil War.  Inside it contains color plates as well as more photos of the light gray and specificly the one used at Alcazar by the government militias.

"pass off as a makeshift armoured tractor cobbled together by the Revolutionary Committee of Solidaric Railroad Workers"

Take a look in the photos section on the Anglian Miniatures Yahoo Group, I ul'd some photos of armored tractors for those guys who were asking for some more reference images so I'm thinking some might be on their way :)

Yep, it was the Mc Neill and Moss book plate number 28 in the copy I have.  Here is another photo:

At the bottom of this page you can see the Rif camo pattern, really nice photo too.

My humble attempt:

I need to redo that Rif War gallery one of these days!

The CA-1 is by no means a good tank, but did give the Milicianos and Loyalist Government forces a something that could be used for cover and a gun platform. At Alcazar it was used a couple times to support the infantry in their assault on the walls only to have the infantry break leaving the tank isolated.

¡Salud!

Awesome! You never cease to learn! And, I have to say, that has a certain "land battleship" flair to it. Very attractive.

Would that Schneider still be available from HLBSC?

Wasn't there a white metal kit of a Schneider once? I believe I once saw it at the Copplestone site, as a  Chinese warlord latest toy.

"Would that Schneider still be available from HLBSC?"

RLBPS still had some of the HLBS CA-1s at their stand at Historicon this year so he may still have a few in stock.

Anyone interested in a scenario for the Spanish Civil War using one of these babies, I have a scenario that I contributed to issue #60 of the Society of Twentieth Century Wargamers Journal.  It covers the Militia's assaults against the walls of Alcazar after they were mined.  Although written for ¡Primera Batalla! ruleset, it could be used for any system.

That is a shame, it really is a nice model.  I am surprised that no retailer like Brigade or other Interwar/Great War sellers haven't bought the molds from HLBS.  These tanks were used in a lot of different areas.

Perhaps Nigel (Anglian) will one day bring out a Schneider. His models are fab.

There might be a solution: Scheltrum Miniatures has a purportedly VSF tank in its range, listed as:
VSF07     French Experimental Weapons Carriage     £15.00 - in the list shown here:
http://www.scheltrum.co.uk/ironclad.html

It might not be a Schneider, but it certainly looks like one.  :?:
