Fallout Mr. Handy (Type I)/Mr. Gutsy
« on: October 05, 2011, 04:23:37 PM »
Thought I would share my work-in-progress for Mr Handy (Type I - the ones you see in FO3 and FO:NV)

Items:
1 Flying Base (I use GW, but you can use whatever you like)
3 Cabochon Beads (1/4 inch diameter - .5cm - I got mine in a Crafting Beads Mix by "Jewelry Essentials" at Michaels)
1 Starwars(tm) Miniatures Line Octuptarra Droid

Step 1:
Trim off the orange nubs from the laser cannons (but not the cannons themselves) and cut the miniature legs as seen in the picture.
Step 2:
Drill a hole in the center post for your flying base. (Not pictured)
Step 3:
Take the laser cannons and fold them up to the body and glue them there (I aimed to have them where the 3 lines bisect the central sphere, made a nice angle)
Step 4:
Glue the Carbochon beads (flat side out) where you joined the laser cannons to the body and glue them there.
(The rest not pictured)
At this point its really up to you - if you have the bits to make blades and flamers and plasma weapons go ahead and add them to the arms - sadly I did not, so I am still searching for bits that I can glue on to the arms.  In the meantime  the last steps are then to:
Prime the model, Paint the model, glue model to flying base.

So got them weaponized and painted.

For the Mr Handy buzz saw - I had some smallish gears from Skullcrafts "Metal Gears and wheels" (www.skullcrafts.com) and I just simply sliced down the "arm" and slid them in and glued them in place.

For Mr. Gutsy's plasma weapon, a friend of mine who plays 40k gave me some bits so I was able to get those put into place.

For the flamer arm (on both models) I just painted the tip with smoke and it turned out all right.

For the pincher arm, I had a hollow plastic dowel that I was able to slice thin enough, widen the hole with a pin-drill and then snip off one edge after I got it glued on.

So here they are. 2 Handy's & 2 Gutsy's

MM-MM those are nice.  Could you do a scale shot with some other minis?

Sure (LtoR: Reaper, GW, Starwars, KKBB) - Just remember the flying bases are at different heights so where one looks shorter or taller than another, its probably because of the post.

Thanks.  I haven't played Fallout in a while, but as I remember, the Mr Handy's would float a little above the players POV.  So those ought to be just about right for scale.  Now to find me some of those droids for less than ebay wants.

Those really look good. Creativity for the win!

Did you buy the droids recently or were they something you'd had for a while (I'm looking for robots for sci-fi gaming myself)?

Great minds think alike - that's what I used for my Mr. Gutsy too.

Although, I got lazy, and didn't bother with the saw or plasma gun...

Fantastic idea.  Thank you for sharing.  I know what my next addition to my Fallout minis will be.
