Smaller Scales? (Sacrilage I know)
« on: October 12, 2011, 09:04:28 PM »
Hello All,

Sadly I think the specter of housing downsizing is upon me and I may have to abandon my blossoming 28mm BOB collection for a smaller scale as space will be at a premium.  :'(

I know sukhe_bator did a wonderful article on BOB in 15mm. Anyone go to 10mm and have any pointers?

I know, I know, sad indeed.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards and thanks,

Whitewolf

Oddly enough I had a couple of 10mm armies in a shopping basket earlier today but closed the browser still undecided. They were medieval asian though for another of my hair brained schemes.

Not sure of the ranges available for BOB but I think you could get away with plenty of proxies in 10mm.  WWI & WWII should cover the more advanced major powers and Mongols Huns etc are plentiful.

Sure, 28mm is the one true scale but I say why not.  It would certainly lend itself to vast barren wastelands for terrain.

If you make the purchase can you please send me the list and where you were looking? I am not so good at finding proxies -- Copplestone made everything so easy!   ;D

About a year ago I was tempted to down scale due to space and lack of it. I abandoned 28mm in all periods except for my Russian Civil War collection which seems to be called Back Of Beyond these days.

Rather than down size why not look at changing rules. I do still have 6x4 table which I have to put up and take down when I game, but by going to rules like Mud and Blood and making games at a lower tactical level I can still use my 28mm figues. I can fit a couple of companies in a single file box which is plenty for a game and dosn't take up to much space.
When I was looking at going smaller scale I looked at 15, 20mm which there is plenty of.  As for 10mm I think you would have to look at WW1 ranges which should cover all you needs for the bulk of your armies.

For 10mm figures, I think this is the place to look;

A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

We have been using 10 mm Pendraken figures for our recent RCW/BOB games. As mentioned before you can achieve quite a lot with proxies from other ranges/periods. Early War WWI Brits are standing in for Japanese and Chinese Warlords troops. Russian WWI figures as Czech Legion, Baltic Nationals, White Russians and also as Warlord Chinese I believe. Pendraken have a small RCW range, which includes cavalry, MGs, and infantry in budenovkas (the pointy hat).

For images and possibly some inspiration check out our club website (the news section):

Or here are some examples:

For rules we are using the free "Red Actions" set which is excellent and gives us a game in an evening.

All in all using 10 mm for RCW/BoB is a very viable option.

Hope that helps
