Mike's New Demo Board
« on: October 14, 2011, 05:29:39 PM »
Mike likes to make a fresh gaming board and terrain now and again, to keep his demos (not to mention our game photos) looking fresh.  His latest double-sided effort was rolled out earlier this month at HorrorCon, and while we didn't get any pictures of it in action there, it did agree to pose for a few shots the other day.

Side 1 - Mike is working on a series of modular horrors that will fit into the central "well", depending on the scenario being played.  As it's about an inch less in diameter than a CD, it can also be covered with a Scene of Horror, or the Crypt of Cthulhu.

Side 2 - This one works as either a desolate outdoor area or the interior of a cave.

Excellent work - what dimensions are the boards?

Well the regular playing area for Strange Aeons is 2x3' so I'm guessing they are that size. They look great btw!

That looks great, I especially like the cave side, even though it's plainer it's also more versatile!

What do you use for the groundwork? Is the lower area of the cave side the raised "hilltop" on the temple side, or are the elevations on the two sides not actually linked?

What a lovely bit of work, any chance of a virtual walk thru' on the construction?

I always start out planning to do a 'how to'...but then I get excited and finish the whole damn thing before I take any pictures... :?
Essentially, this is a piece of 1/8 MDF with four sides of 1/2 MDF with a little chamfer running through each. The board is glued/brad nailed and then the rest is styrofoam, sand and glue. I used 1/8 and 1/2 styro and I made a special hot wire router for carving out the bricks on the one side. The actual board (both sides) took under a week from start to finish...I wanted to see how fast I could get it done. And while quite simple I think it works great for a demo board. Also, it is the standard 2x3.
Next time I will try and take pictures...

Very nice boards and a great idea to do them reversible. The cave one could be made more cluttered by adding seperate wall sections to it.That would give it more combinations for game play.
I really need to do something like this.
