The Red Beastmen of Krappefortt [PICS]
« on: October 15, 2011, 10:30:16 AM »
Hello again! For Masons Krappefortt project I painted another warband (the first were the Kislevites here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=33620.0). This time they were beastmen accompanied by a minotaur, a centigor and three chaos hounds. Mason wanted these red with light grey fur, so of course I obliged. To make it look more natural I added a touch of dark grey and black in the mix as well on some spots, most notably down the backs of some models. I personally don't like hard edges between two colours of a pelt so I blended it in as well as I could where appropriate. The hounds received the same colours as the rest of the bunch with a bit more patterning on the skin.

To contrast the red skin I painted the loincloths and trousers light green. I think this colour works in all directions: it works as a natural colour, it works for Nurgle and being quite light it even works for slaanesh to some extent (for example on the one with the Fiend face). It may not work that well for Tzeentch or Khorne but the models are already red and white so those gods shouldn't complain anyway ;)

Apart from the green there aren't a lot of colours in use as these fellows just don't wear too much clothing, just your basic black and brown leathers mostly, more colours would look out of place.

The Centigor was missing a horn so I filled the hole where the other horn should be and modelled it as if the horn had broken off.

The Minotaur is a pretty rough sculpt and I don't think we've become friends, on the other hand there are some real gems in there, especially the warthogmen are lovely!

Mason made a lot of effort to model nice bases for these models and he's going to finish them himself, so for now they're a bit brown. I can't wait to see the final result though!

Let me hear the battle cry
Calling on the wind
Let me see the banners fly
Before the storm begins

Great work, Pil!

As I told you, I cannot wait to get my hands on these!

Then it will be time to get out ALL the figures that need their bases finishing, and do them all at once.
With these that will be about 60 of them!

You have done another amazing job, and I too will have some more for you soon.

Thank you!

VERY NICELY DONE! You've given the Beasty Boys an appropriately beastly look. There's quite a diversity of quality in the minis, but you've managed to get them to work well together.

I never manage to get that dry-brushing over black right, maybe it's because you use two colours, either way they look smart.  :o

DeafNala is spot on with that statement. There is a lot of diversity, quality wise, and Pil has tied them together wonderfully well.

P.S. Do you recognize a few, Al?  ;)

Yup...I spotted some Old Friends right off. It's good to see the Feral Fellows done up SO NICELY, & to know, in some very small way, I've aided in your Epic Enterprise.

Thanks all, it was my pleasure!  :-*

Joroas> I do a lot of drybrushing over black and it's best to start off with dark colours that almost completely cover the surface of the model. In this case, but also for my undead, I start off with VGC Charred Brown. In this case it was followed by VGC Dark Fleshtone and finally Citadel Foundation Mechrite Red 8)

I don't do mass basing often but I guess it does speed up those things to do the together. With these you probably have a lot to do because you put in so many wonderful details 8)

More vintage coolness!  The weird thing is that I really dig old-school beastmen but, aside from some Pestigors (which are newish, I guess), don't actually own any.  Time to visit ebay, methinks...

Be prepared for a bit of an outlay, Fungy; I tried to pickup a few over the last fortnight on eBay, but the prices have got a little rich for my blood  :?

Thanks! These old beastmen are really cool models so I'm not very surprised they're so sought after 8)

Great work Pil, old school figs with appropriate paint jobs. I wish o could reign myself in mire when I'm painting but I just end up thinking "just one highlight more, another glaze here...." and the mini ends up taking 3hrs!
