The Adventures of Withnail & Co.
The Story so Far:

Withnail & Co. is a struggling air transport company based in central Asia; Struggling more that usual in recent months because of the predations of a band of villainous Airship Pirates!

~ ~ ~

Outside Kashgar, 1933

The Pirate Airship Iron Buzzard loomed through the clouds over the Tian Shan Mountains as a lone truck bounced along the dusty road far below them. On the bridge of the airship Captain McBride peers through powerful binoculars at the meagre prize.

"Descend to 500 feet and open the gun ports!"

The staff of Withnail & Co were searching for their truck after it apparently crashed on the return journey from town to their hanger. As they arrive at the scene they discover a small group of uniformed airship pirates searching the area and the contents of the truck scattered all around.

Withnail & Co:
Lord Withnail (Grade 3)
Captain Haggan (Grade 2)
Freddie Suggs (Grade 1)
Meredith Holbrook (Grade 1)
Zilly Messick (Grade 1)

Airship Pirates:
Captain McBride  (Grade 3)
Stanley Edmundson (Grade 1)
Libby Hawthorne (Grade 1)
Ray Carter (Grade 1)
John Patterson (Grade 1)
Elliot Self (Grade 1)

Freddie Suggs nabbed the nearest bit of scattered cargo but was bitten by a snake for his trouble! Luckily he was unharmed, but very annoyed!

Airship Captain McBride got to the next one and was rewarded with a box of three grenades (melodramatic laughter followed).

A burst of SMG fire from the Pirates sent Haggan running for cover, but he soon recovered his wits.

The return-fire from Zilly Messick sent Stanley Edmundson and Ray Carter running as well - Edmundson hopping along with a leg wound.

Carter was long gone but Edmundson recovered enough nerve to hobble back to the fight and fired at Meredith Holbrook...

Who ran for it!

Withnail and Freddie had a brief tactical discussion before sending Haggan to face Pirate Captain McBride alone.

More melodramatic laughter followed as McBribe cried "Haha Haggan, now you will die! Meet my minions!"

To haggan's horror a pair of Airship Pirates abseiled to earth from the looming airship!

Freddie blazed away at Edmundson again and the schmuck ran again (albeit slowly).

McBride's lackies (Patterson and Self) charged Haggan.

While Zilly Messick once again sprayed Edmundson with long-ranged SMG fire.

And that was it for Edmundson!

Freddie crept around the rocks and attacked McBride from behind.

Libby finally decided she wasn't really cut out for all this pirating nonsense.

McBride was pushed back by Freddie, who realised this was his chance and gunned down the Pirate instead of continuing the risky business of hand-to-hand.

With Zilly and Withnail come to help Haggan's opponents were dealt with one by one.

Patterson went down... Then Self fell.

And the unused grenades were recovered.

~ ~ ~

We really enjoyed the game (even though we misunderstood a couple of the rules and were scratching our heads sometimes)! It lasted about 2 hours, including choosing out teams and filling in the paperwork for them. I was so keen to unleash the "Meet my Minions" skill that I forgot I had found the grenades! I need to sort out some more interesting terrain, but we made-do with what I had and it didn't spoil the game.

Looking forward to the next one!

Great report! And Meet My Minions is a fun ability if your opponent does not know about it (and tense if he does).

If you have any head-scratching questions, let me know. I'd be happy to answer.

Great little game there. Did everyone have fun?

I particularly like your opening shot. Don't sweat the terrain too much. With .45Adv you can get a lot of mileage out of a few pieces of handy terrain. If you really want to put on the works, treat the whole board as one big bit of terrain!

 Thanks Pete! We had a blast! This game was against one of my oldest friends who now lives over a hundred miles away. We don't get to see each other more than twice a decade, let alone game! Neither of us knew what we were doing (I'd ready the rules bit, he hadn't at all) but it all seemed to flow well enough. We laughed a lot as well.

I really wanted to get the "Saturday morning serial" feel - if I'd had more time I would have given the report a more narrative feel. I have been saving 1930s images from the internet as inspiration for a while and this once seemed to fit the bill nicely!

I think I'll make a few more generic things like roads and a wooden building, then I'll have a go at some central Asian looking things!  :)

Thanks to MaxxVane and dodge as well!

I like the terrain, it's the sort of stuff that could be very useful in a lot of settings. I could rather do with some of that myself.

Aha

Finally got my account set up.....

What do you mean "one of my oldest friends", I'm not ... hang on a minute, you're only 13, I keep forgetting ....

OK, I accept it, I'm an old fart ...

Still whipped your arse though :-)

Anyway, a nice set of rules, if a) I had bothered to read them, or b) Saul wasn't rule blind we'd have understood it a bit better :-)

I look forward to the rematch in another 5 years .....
