Skirmish at Manchu Halt - Manchuria 1939

A few pics of last nights game...

The board at the start of the game. The Japanese forces had to defend Manchu Halt against a Soviet attack aimed at capturing the section of railway to stop supplies to the 'fortress' at Mongula. Both sides had roughly a platoon of troops but the Japanese had hastily thrown up some trenches and the Soviets had a few extra heavy weapons...

Japanese half section in their trench to the north of the railway line.

Japanese forces defending the station house and the lumberyard. This area was to bear the brunt of Soviet supporting fire with the Soviet mortars first round crashing through the roof of the house and exploding inside killing several members of the HQ unit, including the staff sargeant.

Yet more Japanese troops on the north side of the railway line.

The Japanese section patrolling the railway line returns to help in the defence. They were to suffer at the hands of the mortar as they made their way to the defence line.

The table after the first turn showing the start of the Soviet advance. As the Russian troops advanced accross open ground they absorbed the fire from the Japanese defenders. Although this slowed the Soviet advance over the fire swept plain it allowed the Soviet support weapons to fire unhindered on the Japanese troops.

Soviet 76.2mm Infantry Gun shells the Japanese trenches.

The Japanese troops defending the lumberyard prepare for the Soviet assault...

Soviet troops with SMGs prepare to rush the defenders. Although suffering heavy casualties, the section, with support from the platoon command, did manage to break into the Japanese lines.

Japanese forces retreat from Manchu Halt. We actually ran out of time playing but we deemed it to be a Soviet victory, although at heavy cost. The Soviet infantry did hardly anything other than be targets for the Japanese and occupy them while the support weapons tore holes in the Japanese defences.

The game was played using 'Disposable Heroes' and it the first attempt at using the rules and I have to say they played well and gave a nice game. The only thing rather annoying is the need to by so many blooming supplements to get the stats of all your different weapons. But aside from that we will certainly play again and will probably buy all the supplements!

A great looking table. Is the gaming rug custom made? In case it is you simply must give me your tailor's card!
