So, I threw myself into airbrushing my first couple of british vehicles without knowing all that much about who exactly they're supposed to be. I'm hoping someone around here might be kind enough to point me in the right direction, marking-wise.

Here's what I've got at the moment:

My infantry are the 43rd Wessex Fighting Wyverns, so I'd love for most of my armour to belong to parts of the war effort that might have served alongside them, throughout the autumn of '44.

So, let's start from the right. The firefly should probably belong to the 11th Armoured Division. Right? There's really no other way for a random platoon from an infantry division to end up fighting alongside a sherman platoon than pretty much ending up near them by chance? Anyways, red backing on the serial number?

I know exactly who the churchill is. It's the Indefatigable, belonging to the 14th platoon, C-squadron, 31st tank brigade, 9th RTR. I'm sure you understand why ^^

I want the humber to belong to the 43rd Wessex Rifles. Should be NP, right? I've got no clue how to go about finding relevant numbers or even what colour backing I should give it though. Help?

The howitzer crew. I figure they're with the 179th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. I haven't figured out what colour the artillery have on their regimental titles. Blue?

I try to do my homework, but when I've got time over for hobby stuffs I prefer to spend it with a brush in my hand. I've never even done military service - british army formations are a total and utter jungle to me. Getting it right adds a lot of depth to the experience though.

Any assistance will be rewarded with juicy WIP pics. Thanks in advance!

Never heard of 43 Wessex Rifles - are you sure that you have the correct title?

129th Infantry Brigade
4th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry
4th Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment
5th Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment

130th Infantry Brigade
7th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment
4th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment
5th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment

214th Infantry Brigade
7th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry
1st Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment
5th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry

Support Units
8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (Vickers machine gunners)
43rd Reconnaissance Regiment, Reconnaissance Corps
94th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery
112th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery
179th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery
59th Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery
13th Bridging Platoon, Royal Engineers
204th Field Company, Royal Engineers
207th Field Park Company, Royal Engineers (from Bath, Somerset).
260th Field Company, Royal Engineers (from Chippenham, Wiltshire).
553rd Field Company, Royal Engineers
54th Company, RASC
504th Company, RASC
505th Company, RASC
506th Divisional Company, RASC
110th Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery

From the ORBAT above I think your Humber would come from 43 Wessex Recce Regiment, which might have had the Humber Armoured Car probably only in SHQ or RHQ though.  More likely its Recce Troops would have had Universal Carriers (2 sections) Humber Light Recce Cars (1 Section)

The Arm of Service markings are summarised here:

The howitzer crew. I figure they're with the 179th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. I haven't figured out what colour the artillery have on their regimental titles. Blue?

I'm doing 43 Wessex too.
Have decided on 8th Armoured Brigade myself as they worked with the division during Operations Market Garden and Clipper. See here for examples;

31st Tank Brigade is here;

Recce Regt AoS was 41 on Green over Blue they had plenty of Humber Armoured Cars initially 50/50ish mix with LRC's but in 1945 Daimlers were issued too.

Hehe he is playing with me (among others), so considering what I got from you earlier, he really shouldent bother marking these poor vehicles up, he could just paint them black and burned from the start Muahahaha!

Of course not, unless you are heads on with a Köningstiger I would dare to say. Besides, I am sure that I will prevail, when Fredriks Britts are sitting there and drinking their tea, I will move in and take the objectivs, at least thats my plan so far heh.

The rest of the quotation is missing, "Achtung Jabo!  AAAAAARRRGGGHHHH!"

That must be the one that did not break down or was it out of fuel waiting for the Typhoons or were the crew about to fire the last of their three rounds before blowing it up?

I think you mean 43 Infantry (Wessex) Division, which did have a Wyvrn as its Div Tac symbol.

I will check which vehilces they drove in 43 Recce, some had Daimlersm some Humbers some even had US M8's.

I have s sneeking suspicion that they drove Daimlers - but dont quote me. Inf Recce was Green over blue with white 41.

The Churchill wil need to be a different Div, as the only tanks were usually in the Armoured Divisions or Ind Brigades. 79th drove these although mostly funnies.

The Firefly (I think you have one in there) - ditto needs to go in a Armoured Div. (again not all Armoured DIvs drove them)

There is a reinactment lot who do this = google 43rd Division and they will pop up. I am sure they have a Daimler Scout and Armoured Cars. I have done some in the past. I have a reference to a Humber Scout car from 43rd Div

Google Mole Decals for your DIV tac symbols.

Here are some shots of a 43rd Recce Dainler Scout Car and a Guards Div Daimler Amoured Car that I did.

43 Recce arrived in Normandy with Humber Mk IV A/C & Mk III LRC. They only got Daimlers in April 1945 IIRC replacing the LRC's

Am glad you cleared that up - I wasn't 100% sure about the Daimlers. I imagine the Reinactors drive one as it was easier to get than the Humbers?

I am thinking of doing a white metal kit of the Humber LRC, as I have a few clients who want it and I don't think it has been modeled in 28mm. The RAF have one in their museum, its very nice. A good few Recce units drove them.

regards BB

Very impressive the way you have painted the armour. Seems like you have had plenty of help with markings but would highly recommend the book British Tanks in Normandy by ludovic Fortain for assistance.

Cheers

I have that book, as well as the two volumes on the British Soldier in the Histoire Collection. Also Dennis Olivers similar but smaller volume on British Armour in NW Euurope. I got the idea for the SOD from it as shown below. The Inns of Court Reg (The Devil's Own)
