WIP: Two Waterfront Longshoremen

Okay, this is still a work in progress. I'm showing it because I am happy with how the highlighting on the black turned out. Black is always one of those colors that I have had a hard time with. The gray highlights always look off to me. But with these two, I started off with a dark charcoal gray for the base instead of black. I then wet-blended 3 more shades of gray in and used straight black for the shadows and creases.

The rest of the figures still needs work, but I'm in a good mood this morning and just felt like sharing my work so far.

:D they look cartoony and I like that :)

Rich, the black works good, the skin and the trousers need some highlights

Did you prime these guys black before you painted and then applied the charcoal on top of that?  If that was the case you didn't need to paint the black for the shadows and creases right.

Looks good.

What paint were you using for the greys?  I have a figure that has a black leather jacket, that I might want to add some highlights to.

To me the skin could be a little darker.  It looks a little light.

That black is very good... I have a Gestapo man gaining dust in the shelf because I'm afraid of highlighting and ruining it..

The blacks look great, and considering against what I do, the faces look very good too.

Nice job :)

Thanks for the comments everyone. Like I said, I'm still not done with the figures. I was just very happy with how the black looked and wanted to share. I use craft paints, thinned with acrylic extender for all my painting.

Try mixing light blue with dark purple and highlighting black with that. It works quite well as a highlight, giving enough color to keep the highlight from looking odd.
