Stone Circle WIP - help please!
« on: February 02, 2012, 10:20:02 AM »
This is a my first piece of terrain for a new Pulp/Horror/Cthulhu style game and I am trying some new techniques.
I wanted to create an 'eldritch glow' style effect coming off the cultist symbol on the stones.  Its coming along well, but I'm a bit stuck on how to make it 'pop' just right (and not just look very mossy!) before I do the final flocking etc.  Any suggestions welcomed.

Also - how would I do blood splatters in the 'glow' area?

Would more cult symbols on the rocks detract by making it too busy?
Or is the one, single symbol pulsing with evil more effective? ....bwagahahahah!

In full lighting

In thematic low lighting

I think the glow effect looks good as it is, but if you're worried about it looking like moss you could add a little more yellow to the mix.

Yeah, lightening the top colour would work, add in a little yellow or white for a very final highlight.

Just a thought as well - if you can, pop down to your local artist's suppliers or craft shop and see if they have any luminous paint. A generous drybrush over what you've already done will look pretty special, especially if you keep the mood lighting.  :)

Vallejo flourescents are the mutts nuts for this sort of thing :D
You get the bright glow look without ten tonne of extra highlighting and shading.

I'd go with a stronger normal paint effect first with white and yellow (as suggested by Jollybob  :) ) and then see about the luminous paint.

Looks good though  8)

Vallejo Model Colors has a paint called "Lime Green" that I've used for glowing weapons effects, like the grills on plasma guns.  I don't think its considered a fluorescent color, but it gives a very luminous effect, especially in contrast to drab colors.  You can mix in some yellow and get  brighter highlights.

I've done some more work on it now, with extra highlights.
