Southwestern Desert

Ok I'm working on my desert table again in preperation for my American Pulp game.  Over the Last two days we've done the table top and started some rocky flat hills.  For the table top we chose just to paint it to help and miniatures stand up better on the surface.  We wanted to to still look interesting and complex like desert flat lands do so we sponged several desert colors over a warm grey base then we drybrushed on some sandy color over than in a transparant layer.  For the final stage we gently worked some artist charcole into the surface with some paper towls.  The sponging of the laytex house paint had left a very subtle texture and the charcole really brought that out and added more depth.  I'm pretty happy with it considering it's only paint.  The mesa pictured is an old project.

Like I said I'm pretty happy with it.  It might have looked nicer with some real texture added to it but for just a painted surface I think it's pretty nice.  

My wife decided to go to work on another project after we finished the table.  I discovered her working on a small building while I was working on putting a primer cote on some copplestone figs.  



She was working on some little squatter shacks to give the board some 1930s feel.

Well we got the hills glued together late last night .  I still need to base them and add plaster and sand surface treatments.  



Today I went out and got some sticks I thought would make nice dead trees.  I'm going to make a few more of these but not a whole bunch since this is desert terrain.  I still need to sand the bases then paint them.  After that I'll add a bit of grass and scrub.

Wow! I love those colours & never having visited that area, would never have thought of using that colour combination for desert terrain. Definitely better looking than the usual yellow sand blandness :love:

Good looking terrain and Mrs Ironworker's buiding looks promising too. Looking forward to seeing the game pics.

Ok we did a little more work this afternoon.  the trees are ready to be painted and I made six rocky outcroppings.  My wife also finished the first of her shacks.  It's really nice.  The top comes off to allow us to place a couple minis inside.  It will fit two even on the Privateer style stands.  The window provides a nice vantage to shoot from.  

 

I didn't get those hills based today.  Perhaps I'll get a chance to do that tomorrow.

Ok we got our desert hills based and textured this weekend.  Looks like I'll be able to start painting this week.  



I textured the tops of the hills with plaster and the sides with sand.  Here is a shot of the top texture.

Well I'm getting pretty close to being done with the first set of projects for my desert terrain set.  I've still got some rocky outcroppings to paint and I intend to add some scrub bushes to the rocks and even to some places on the hills.  Still I feel like I could easily start playing on this terrain if I wanted to.
