First of the enemies to Artizan Designs French Foreign Legion
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:21:35 PM »
Mike has started making the first of the enemies for his French Foreign Legion.

We've called the first pack 'Morrocans', but they will do for lots of tribal warriors across North Africa.

More temptation to get drawn into Spanish Colonial wars!

I was  trying to stay away from late 19th Century/20th Century...

Very nice figures.

Troupes Coloniales (also known at various times as Troupes de Marine) are the chaps with anchors on their pith helmets.

The term Troupes Coloniales also includes indigenous troops that weren't part of the Armée d’Afrique, such as the Tirailleurs sénégalais, malgaches, indochinois, etc. But it usually refers to the Marine/Colonial infantry.

Im hoping their in the turn of the century khaki drill tunic and trousers, they would be usefull. Hoping we see a medical orderly in apron like in the Osprey book too. Nice to see the opposition turning up as well!

That's also what I'm thinking... they wouldn't look out of place in a Pulp setting 8)

Troupes Coloniales (also known at various times as Troupes de Marine) are the chaps with anchors on their pith helmets.

They were known as troupes de marine until they were placed under the direct authority of the French ministry of War in 1900. Until the 1890's, all things colonial came under the authority of the French Naval Ministry, which is why colonial troops were referred to as marines even though they had stopped serving on ships during the 1830's. When the ministry of colonies was finally separated from the naval ministry, all colonial troops were transferred to the army, included the various native units Dylan mentioned.

A while back,  Mike Owen asked me to send him uniform info on French colonial uniforms, so you may expect more of these. In the meantime, here's what the Legion in colonial blouse and uncovered kepi look like :

I think they are wearing the version issued after 1900 to both the Legion and marines,(marsouins). Very useful. The only difference between the 2 is insignia and sometimes gaiters. Good for Madagascar, west Africa, the Dardanelles in WW1 as well as the Riff war and Syria in the 1920s.
Heres some legionaires wearing it.
Then a 'marsouin'(French marine)
Then some Legionaries again

Thanks everyone! They don't look that different from the legionaires in shirts to me but then again I'm very liberal with uniforms in 28mm.Especially as these will never see a real historical game.

In France, all the troops belonging to the "troupes coloniales", we call them too : La Coloniale.
