Jihadistan Buildings... Walled Garden Added
« on: February 29, 2012, 05:21:11 PM »
Having seen zizi's neat middle eastern buildings here's mine which are much more rural and poverty stricken not least because of our greedy and aggressive Irakistan neighbours.  :P
Basically I've made one house and cast it several times so I can lay them out in different ways and hopefully have a small addition to my village without them looking too similar. They've got lift off roofs as we play this at skirmish level

Compound number one

Compound number two

Compound number three

... and laid out to give a feel of the alleys

A few finishing touches to go, but you know how excitement can overtake progress eh?

Plenty more blah over at the blog: http://6milphil.wordpress.com/2012/02/29/hovelly-versatile/

Nice.
I'm aproaching the compound style from another angle, as I'm not basing the terrain.
It want separate walls (less storage space) and the possibility of different layouts, but i still have to tackle the whole keep walls standing upright problem. Butresses do the trick, but I can't find much photos of such walls in Afghanistan. The majority is more of the big brick type which you rendered so well in compound nr. 2.

As for detailing, have you though about drainage pipes. they seem common on that type of roof :

That's some I'll consider when I do more urban buildings but these are all rural and I've not seen similar detailing.

This is the kind of thing I'm drawing on.

Have you seen matakishi's buildings? He does both middle eastern compounds and urban; http://www.matakishi.com/makingbuildings.htm

Well I'd assume they put those pipes in the buildings with recessed rooftops (like yours) to prevent water from flooding the roof.
The picture with the sniper has a flat top roof, so water would run of it and thus has no use for 'em.

I'll look into creating some different sized AC/units to send to you. The problem is the mesh. not much surface of it on one filter and these things last a month. (probably another week 'till the current one is due for replacement  :?)

And yes, I too visited the internet shrine of terrainbuilding  ;)
My next build is based on one of his apartments. scaled to 20mm but with a larger footprint, in foamcore however, as I still have several plates of it.

I'll have a dig around to see if is any drainage is on those buildings but with an average rainfall of 25-30cm and most of that in the mountains I think it's unlikely. That's why the rivers and the irrigation systems are so important.

I had an idea for this. What about using pennies as feet and disguising them as a few rocks, tufts of grass or small piles of rubbish? You could set one on one side and one on another.

eg;

If that makes any sense.

Makes perfect sense.
A similar thought had crossed my mind but with plastic or alu sheet on each end.
Hadn't considerd I actually only need one per side.  ::)

I only suggest coins because it's easier and cheaper. Are the walls going to be foamboard?

Yes, 5mm thick foamcora, as I still have approximatly 1 square meter at hand.
(I'm saving my 3mm forex plates for 28mm PA buildings.)

I've also been using 3mm foamboard which I really like, not least because it's 40% easier to cut.

I've just finished my rural bazaar, which has made me think I should go back and detail up my urban one... satellite dishes, aircon and signage etc.

True, but I'm a bit weary of using 3mm because it's more subject to warpage, although yours don't seem to suffer from that.

I'm assuming these aren't concrete buildings (otherwise I'd suggest using some paperlipcs to represent metal rods sticking out).
I found one photo which suggests branches or beams are used as a roof support :

I think the mdf base helps prevent warpage, and perhaps the pins I use to hold it together. I also "plaster" both sides of the wall at the same time as I think that doesn't help/

Yes the roof supports do seem to be wood, I've only ever seen it on the rural buildings very rarely, but then it's irregular as if it's a found piece or two. I have one more compound planned so I'll try it on that.

Good looking buildings.
Really like the textures on the walls.
Well done.
