The Walking dead in minitures
« on: March 05, 2012, 12:20:17 AM »
Hey there
Has anybody played the Walking dead boardgame (comic book version) by z man games?
This of course is based off the TV series and the comic book "The walking dead" which we love.
I was wondering if you could convert that into a miniture game?

Any other suggestions of rules or minitures I could use to replay this would be great.

I could see senerio's with minitures also but I don't have a clue what system would be good.
No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck.

There are several systems out there.  Some more detailed than others.  All Things Zombie will allow you to play group of survivors through multiple scenarios.  For stand alone games Akula,s Total Ar:se will let you play one off scenarios and can be used for multiple scenarios.  Nice thing about it is it is free: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/roweller/ARSE/akulasrules.pdf
There are others out there and they all have their pros and cons.  For miniatures you now have a pretty huge selection in 28mm.  There is a good link on the mane Post Appoc page.  I am sure that many others will chime in so just keep reading.

You can buy Rich and his family here:

Just scroll down a bit. These are based on the comics, not the tv series :)

Thanks snitcythedog for the link to Akula,s Total Ar:se. I printed that out and set up a solitair scenerio to playtest the rules. I bought a bag of zombies and Bag of Babes and used what I could find out of my 1/72 collection to make up survivors. I have a bunch of old hot wheel cars that are pretty beat up and a nice big M60 tank that I built 1/72 kit. I also have a few buildings and trees to put out there including a IRS on fire model that I built a long time ago. The zombies are generated randomly by putting bingo chips all around the table to represent a siteing of something. When the suvivors get wwithin 18" the take a perception roll and on 1-4 can see the chip and this reveals what is there. I used a modified deck of cards removing 5-10 in three suits so when a suvivor sees a chip he draws a card and that is the number of zeds he sees. I also removed all the royal cards except 2 kings ans 2 queens they represent a Tank and/or a Lich/witch. Jokers are nothing. I used the suggested card system for movement but made some cards for this. They turned ou pretty good. I also came up with a rule for starting vehicals. After entering and attempting to start a vehical roll a 6d to determine how hard this vehical will be to start. Then roll against that with a 6d. any roll less than the first will start it. So if the first roll is a 1 you can't start that vehical (No gas etc) leave that die by the vehical for the remainder of the game. Anyways my survivors got a cpickup truck started and are moving fast and a group of 3 zed decided to attack it from the side. I didn't see anything to rule on what happens when a zed is hit by a vehical. Any suggestions? Oh and I ordered the Walking dead board game (The comic book version) but it isn't here yet.

Greetings, back on April 1st I started this post to get into making a Walking dead in miniature game.
I got a lot of good feedback and have made some progress. I am now making a modular city block that can be altered.
I have gathered some mini's rules and can soon start playing.

Thanks Inkwell,

Well we played our first game Sunday night and I thought it went well.
My Daughter Erica and my wife Brenda played and enjoyed it.
We all started with a group of 3 survivors based on the Walking dead.
I had Daryl Glen and Dale.
Everything was driven by randomizing including the group we got and were we started.
The object was to forage for things gaining points while not being eaten.

All 3 groups managed to get a vehical started and my 2 gamers promptly moved to exit off of the other side that they entered from that was thier exit point. They both got 40 points each for the vehicles they exited with. This was the first time playing and they really did not want me to go over all the rules and objectives in great detail they just wanted to play.
I however started a army truck and was heading toward my exit point when it dawned on me to stay and enter a building to search for stuff.
It was late so we ended things there but I can still go on and search the armory at my own time as everything is still set up.

It was a good start to get them interested more in playing a bit deeper at a later game.
Anyway here are some pics.

First pic is my group Daryl Glen and Dale starting the Army truck
2nd Pic is erica's group Shane Andrea and Otis driving the White Skyline crosstown.

Where did you get the buildings from...ie. manufacturer; manufacturer codes, etc. Any info would help. They look great.

Thanks in advance.

The main buildings are mostly from DPM  and they sell new at about $20.00 each.
I got a good deal on e-bay with these 8 buildings for $43.00

Cutting's scissor Co.  DPM   10300
Good fellows Hall     DPM   10800
Kelly's Saloon   DPM   10100
B. Moore Catalog/Showroom  DPM   10140
Townhouse #2   DPM   11000
Townhouse #3   DPM   11100
City Cab Co. ?   DPM   11200
Engine House   Tyco   7781

I also had a Model power IRS building on fire (No 470) that you see in the pics That is a bit more pricey
