Ancients are not really my thing, but I have just finished these for a customer. They were photographed quickly on the workbench so the lighting is not that great.

They look great, a very good job on the read clothing and the sheild designs are free hadn? as they are beautifully done

Lovely job - especially on all that red, which we all know is one of the toughest things to get right.

Lovely figures too - as you'd expect from Artizan. I know these are sculpted by Steve Saleh, who did the World of The Greeks range for Foundry, but somehow these seem a bit more characterful than his earlier work. Maybe some of the incomparable Mike Owen's magic dust has rubbed off on him!

Thanks for the kind comments. They were really nice figures to paint. I can't take credit for working out the red combination. I got that from Dave Rowbothom (aka Court Jester), and it is certainly where the P3 score on their coverage.
Lowtardog, yes the designs are hand painted. I never could get the hang of decals.

I'll try to answer all the questions. As I said the colours are taken from Dave Rowbothom's on line magazine.

There are two different colour schemes. First the figure on the right:

Start with Sanguine Base then Sanguine highlight. Next Khador Base Red mixed 50/50 with Sanguine Highlight. Then Khador Red Base on its own. From there I added increasing amounts of Khador Red Highlight until I got it to the shade I wanted. The paint was applied in 'very' thin coats to help the blending effect and keep everything smooth.

The figure on the left starts with Foundry Scarlet Base, then 50/50 mix of the Scarlet Base and Khador Red (P3). Then Khador Red on its own and brought up by adding increasing amounts of Khador Highlight. Again, each layer uses very thin paint.

The base is GW sand. Start with brown ink then GW bestial brown, followed by Vallejo Orange Brown, then GW bubonic brown, Vallejo Dark Sand and a final flick of Vallejo Pale Sand.

Finally I buy my P3 paints from Wargames Workshop, they are available as singles and the service is first class their web site is www.wargamesworkshop.com/

The grass is the Silflor grass tufts. Hope this helps. If I've missed anything just ask.

The tufts are really good. I get mine from International Models, who have the European rights to sell Silflor products. I haven't checked it out but apparently it is cheaper to buy from Scenery Express in the US - I understand that International Models cut the normal sheet into 4.
I use the 4mm autumn tufts.

Yes, they are lovely figures & the red is particularly well done. The blending is stunning   :love:

I've also never been much of an Ancients fan [at least not pre-"Arthurian"], but I saw a demo game using Spartans at Triples last year & it really blew me away. I was _almost_ tempted to go & buy a load of them, so they could sit in my lead stockpile for a few years  ::
