Small house I've just completed
« on: March 12, 2012, 02:19:01 PM »
As this is my first post, Hello All!!!

I'm a long time lurker on these forums and decided it was time I joined and posted something, so here goes.

I like the idea of creating a whole town from scratch as I've seen a few other people that have done the same thing here and quite frankly other peoples towns look amazing and I want one for myself :)

Let me know what you think and any constructive criticism is much appreciated.
Also I have early unpainted pics up on my blog if anyone is interested plus a load of other random stuff that I'm working on:

Looks very very nice! Good work. What did you make the roofing tiles out of?

The tiles are made out of these craft foam sheets that I got from the pound-shop (dollar store to the yanks ;) ) just cut into strips then trimmed down to make them uneven.

They are pretty good to work with as they are quite bendy so it's quite easy to create old sagging roofs from the strips and with them being a few mm thick I think they look a bit more substantial than card titles.

Great work!

All the small details really help bring it to life.
Love the wood pile idea, consider it stolen!

And welcome to the Forum!

Cheers for the welcome and thanks for the compliments  :)

I'm sure I stole the woodpile idea from someone on here anyway so you're welcome to join the steal chain.
By the way The woodpile is made from the barrel of an old paint-brush chopped up them split using sprue clippers.
I think the garden needs some more detail and some kind of crops in the tilled area but at the moment I have no idea...

Great idea with the craft foam, it looks to have a good texture and flexibility too. I'll have to have a butchers and see if there's any cheap around here.

I love it. I wish I would get around trying to build something like this. I'm just too lazy to give it a try - and seeing your little house has me going "I'm never going to make ahouse look like that, why even bother..."

Hopefully you'll build lots more to look at. Oh, and welcome aboard! :D

My favorite is the vines on the side of the chimney, very well done.

Really nice!  :-*

Plenty of little details to look at.

The hanging sign is just a piece of art, and your color choice and textures gives this building a lot of character.

Thanks for sharing.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

A small design nit that I just noticed, the door opens right where the hearth would be. Something to look out for on your next project, which I hope is soon, cuz this one is great.

Regarding the garden area;
You could try adding some 'tufts' or small balls of 'underbrush' in neat little rows, that would do the trick!
Tufts would probably stand up to the rigours of gaming a little better, though.

How about an axe embedded in the tree trunk by the log pile?

If you want to add a little more depth to the otherwise flat areas of the base, dolls house plants and flowers work pretty well, just make sure that you use the smaller varieties.
