Rules for Pirates?
« on: October 05, 2006, 01:53:38 PM »
Hello,

till now I am just a fan of these minatures, so I own some and I try to paint some every now and than.

I visit the witchhunter page and some other's regular and have fun to view all those brilliant painted minis.

But I have never really played one of this tabletop games. Somewhen in the past I tried once or twice the fantasy game of the company which has not to be named here, but I wasn't rapt.

When I read some of the posts here I get the feeling: Maybe I should give it an other try.

As I got many of the foundry pirates (I steped already two times in that bargain traps from foundry  ) maybe this is a good start.

So finaly after all this talks my question. What rules can you recomment me  as a start for playing with pirates.

For the beginning I have just downloaded the gloire demo rules and I am gonna read them now (thanks to Pete and Operator5 to provide this demo).

Thanks for trying out Gloire! I think you'll find the basics of it work well.

Since the initial response to Gloire was so positive, there will be a Pirates supplement published! This will contain specific rules for pirate situations (like boarding parties), new pirate-based archetypes, and new abilities.

Now, it won't be out for a while, but when it comes out, I think it will fit what you're looking for very well.

It will also be called:

Under the Black Flag

It should be out middle of next year. I'll be putting a release schedule up for 2007 in December.

That sounds good. Even if it will take a while till it is out.

Will it also cover how vessels will move? I think it must have something to do with the Cpt. abilities and the size of the vessel and of course the wind.
it could be interessting if you have to catch a ship before you can enter it.

Since the book is still being written, I can't entirely say how ships will be handled.   Your ideas are interesting and I'll consider them.

I played a naval game of "the fantasy game of the company which has not to be named here" on Monday and it was great fun!
Pirate Orcs vs. Undead in a ship to ship battle.

I know they aren't everyones taste (or anyone's here it seems  ) but it's pretty much the only system that gets played by my group.

I understand that playing The Nameless Behemoth's Fantasy Game with friends is better than not playing at all.

Part of the issue with ships is that NBFG handles mass combat on large tables. Gloire is designed for small numbers of figures on a small table. Playing Gloire on a 2 meter by 1 meter board (which is the kind of space you need for a 25mm naval game) is somewhat contrary to the spirit of the game.

That may be true, but the actual playing surface that the figures can use is just the deck area.  The ships may do a lot of wondering about, but when it comes down to the boarding action the rules need to be skirmish level, free flowing and fast paced!

You are right though any game is better than no game!

One thing I do need is Pirate themed scenarios!

I liked the idea of The Waylaid Messenger that was posted here - i'm planning on trying something similar and I want to try "Smugglers caught red-handed" and a good old fashioned Tavern Fight!

But I need more ideas!

Edit: I don't want to de-rail this topic though I'll start another thread!
Edit 2: Done it: click here if you can help me!

Maybe not full navigation, but it could be interesting to simulate the last 100 feet or so as the ships try to close.

Hmmmm....

I don't know if this is old stuff for you, but there is also a small pirate game on the foundry side. It is also available as pdf file there. I have not read it yet, but I wanted to let you know.

If you go to the pdf library there are also other interessting things like how to make a pirate ship, flags to print out and many other useful stuff also for Africa and Old West.

I've played "Pirates" by FlagShip games a few times. It runs pretty well and certainly gets the feel of ship to ship combat. It also covers boarding actions etc.
You do need a fair size games table though if you're playing in 25mm!
