Escape ... Into Danger - After Action Report
« on: April 07, 2012, 06:26:00 PM »
Hi All,

A quick report of our Strange Aeons game, which we played this afternoon.

We diced up "Escape ... Into Danger" as the scenario and worked out a Threshold group and Lurker group, as per the main rules. As I had just received “Morbid Adventures” in the post (from Mike at Black Hat Miniatures), I quickly flicked through it for my Lurker group. Being relatively new to the game we used fairly basic agents and lurkers – adventuring types and cultist types with a "degenerate" for good measure.

The board, standard 2’ x 3’

The agents move cautiously towards the lurker board edge ...

... when they come under fire from the cultist leader and his diabolical henchmen ...

... several of the cultists are down and out of the action ...

... but then the agents get close and are suddenly cut down in their tracks by the cult leader taking up a defensive position in the old barn ...

... the agents draw him out and gun him down ...

The Threshold Agents in all their glory

A most satisfying game, even though I didn’t manage to down all the agents before they escaped the board; but at least the three survivors didn’t manage to find any map fragments. Ha!

Great report, miniatures and scenery!
That board looks great and the barn is excellent.
Love it!

Never thought of using Lobster Johnson, but it certainly works.

Nice game, RMZ.  :D  So which rules give the best pulpy flavour?

Hi,

Thanks all for the taking a look and making comment; your support here really is great.

@ Aggro84

That old Plasticville Barn was one of the best pieces of terrain I ever laid my hands on – Plasticville here in the UK is a bit hit and miss and someone at a model railroad meet gave it to me (in kit form). You should be able to pick one up in the States without too much problem.

@ Styx

Having looked at your blog a couple of days of go and seen the selection of swag up for grabs and the comment here, you have grabbed my attention and a big THANK YOU to your contributors, they all have been very generous with the prizes. I will try and check out your blog if I can get wi-fi where I’m staying.

@ Joras

Best pulp flavour – I think it’s more how you play the scenario rather than the rule set itself. The rule sets, which I play regularly (Chaos in ..., .45A 1st ed. & Strange Aeons, Fear and Faith) have different angles on the same take and I enjoy all of them.

This particular SA scenario called for the Threshold Agents to escape off the lurkers’ edge of the board – a bit “British Bulldog” like and because of the lurker choice became a shoot-out rather than anything supernatural. However, with a different lurker set up it would play another way. For example, using a witch lurker and a couple of familiars would give a much more supernatural feel with “weird things” happening to the agents. The “Fear and Faith” game Joe and I played had a very “Ramsey Campbell” feel to it for me, which is exactly how I had intended it to be; the characters being specifically chosen for their “other world” attributes.

And just to add to the mix, I’m quite looking forward to using LotOW with adaptations found on LAF and in Wargames, Soldier and Strategy.

Thanks.  One of the great things about Pulp is that figures are not game specific, so you can do anything with a decent enough collection.  Now that I found out about Egyptian wolves, I will add the option for a Werewolf band to my Mummies, just need some rationale for a Zombie and Vampire collection!  :D

Vampires in Egypt? Just read the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice (especially The Vamire Lestat and Queen of the Damned)...the most ancient Vampires in these books came from Egypt. So why not?

I was looking for an unarmed vampire, thanks.  But looking through my painted lead pile (!) I came across the East Riding and Bolt Action minis (German vampires and slayers) that would do for my overarching cover story of a 1935ish Cairo with a background of intrigue to take over the Suez Canal, dominate the Mediterranean and control the oil fields.  So, a German vampire band being hunted by a covert British Military Slayer force seems right.  Certainly, there are enough lovely Artizan oddballs to fill each group.
