Having a break from Back of Beyond & pulp for a while, I decided to make a start on some Imperial Romans from Foundry.

These have been sitting in their blisters for around 10 years and part of this year's pledge is to get them all painted, so one unit a month here we come!

January - 14 x auxiliary infantry with command. Shield transfers from Little Big Men Studios

Great work!

Where did the bases come from? Did you cut them yourself? Silly question but I'm wondering what I should do the next time I want to paint something that needs to rank up.

How hard was applying those shield transfers?

One unit a month? I admire your ambition! (Doesn't sound like much, but darned tough to keep that work rate up for a whole year!)

They look good though. A very tidy job, and blue shields instead of the usual 'auxiliary green' - nice.

The bases are MDF precut ones I got from http://www.principlesofwar.com/ but there are several places you can get them. I did think about cutting my own but it wasn't worth the extra effort

The shield transfers are wonderful! Unlike the old waterslide type these are excellent. They come 12 on a sheet, shield bosses already cut out. You just cut out the individual ones, peel off the top clear plastic layer, flip them over, apply to a white painted shield, moisten the backing sheet and press it in place then remove the backer. Once dry, just paint the shield edges to blend them in and varnish over the top

I went for the blue colour purely as I liked the transfer design but the green ones were tempting!

I have those same guys (well, some of them are the same). I love those Foundry Ancients. I had a load years ago. For some reason I just went off the whole Ancients thing and they haven't been played with for ages. Maybe I should get them out again.

Quite an old picture. Back in my enamel days. I'd like to think my painting has improved since then, but I think I'm deluding myself.

My thoughts exactly. They look better than what I put on the board sometimes (at least the things I paint).

I wasn't saying that I thought they were awful, just that I don't seem to have made much progress in the intervening years. My new stuff isn't better to the degree that I would like it to be.

Very nice - both of them. However many ancient armies exist, Romans are always a classic. Lovely stuff.

Sorry for the minor hijack.

Looking forward to seeing Auton's army take shape as the Year Eight progresses. Might even inspire me to paint a few more of my guys.

Perhaps a Plynkes v Auton Roman Civil War game to end the year?

Agreed, I haven't used enamel paints in over fifteen years!
