Another 28mm pirate ship project
« on: January 28, 2008, 02:21:02 AM »
Hi all

Here's a pirate ship I started which is based on the Gary Chalk model. With the new LOTHS book out I thought I'd make one of these to try and get the guys at my local club interested.

Here a picture of progress so far.

I've created a webpage here with more details and the different stages of construction so far.

http://6mm.wargaming.info/page1010.shtml

Hopefully I will have some more stages completed in about a week.

Cheers
Kieran

Nice looking ship, I have a few of these same ships that I used for the play Testing on LotHS.

Looks good, keep it up...

An interesting site.
Looking forward to part 2

Hi

Heres the second installment of my pirate ship construction straight from the construction yards. The hull is almost finished and  its starting to look more like a ship! Next its on to the masts and sails.

Just curious: Where do you intend to place the steering wheel/rudder (is it called that in English?)?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Rudder is good, in a car it's called a "steering wheel", on a ship it's a "ship's wheel" or just "the wheel".

I'm placing it to the left of the main mast but it would have been better to be in the middle in front of the main mast. By the time I assembled it and cut the holes for the mast I realised that there wasn't any room for the wheel (the Gary Chalk version doesn't have a wheel at all).

Hi

It used to be in the Library section of the Foundry site but it looks like it they are redoing that section.

Send me a PM if you want a copy of the article

That looks AWESOME!

Too bad I wouldn't have the stamina to build something like that. The problem with the Gary Chalk designs is that following the plans to the letter still only creates a very bare-boned ship, whereas the ships pictured in his article have had all kinds of extra embellishments, conveniently left unmentioned in the plans. A beginner modeller might not notice this until he's inspected the pictures very closely, and could start building a ship thinking it'll turn out as nice as Gary Chalk's ones if he only does exactly what the plans say.

The decorations you've made outshine Gary Chalk's, by the way.
"When to keep awake against the camel's swaying or the junk's rocking, you start summoning up your memories one by one, your wolf will have become another wolf, your sister a different sister, your battle other battles, on your return from Euphemia, the city where memory is traded." - Italo Calvino

Excellent choice of colours. Now, my old "Lady Luck" sailed off to anchor in the Professor´s port, but I´m seriously tempted to build another ship now that I´ve  seen this fine piece...
