how do you paint them up to get that dog look. I have tons of dog figs and they all look crap when I paint them.

Pull up Google Images of the breed and study them intently. There are subtle colorations and patches here and there that make all the difference...

Can we get a ban on further commercial wargame folks being named Andrew? Good lord, how can a man keep track of them all?!

none of which actually answers the question what painting technique do you use to get the transitions

You could do a wet blend on them, but I've gotten decent results with multi-stage highlighting as well, starting with a very dark brown/black mix and shading up gradually from there.  No matter how you do it, the key is getting the colors to transition from black to brown as smoothly as you can manage.  One of those techniques best learned by repeated practice.  Serves well for painting horses too.

Wouldn't wet blend these. Layering would work very well. Just a matter of preference :)
But if you want to do these types of paintjobs really FAST and good looking: use an airbrush. I think you can do 90% of such paintjobs in about 10 minutes time.

I don't wetblend, generally. I just use subtle transitions with dry brushing...that said, I am not a professional painter. Unless...one of you wants to toss some money my way...! lol

Warzone Resurrection Capitol K-9 Squad is up for preorder. Three doggies there, including a bloodhound that I find rather keen, unlike the BoW reporter:

Probably won't be possible to get 'em without the handler tho.

At miniatureMOJO we have 3 German Shepherds, 3 Border Collies and 3 wolves, all by Ebob.

They paint up nicely, here are mine with a 32mm Black Scorpion figure.

Cheers
Matt

Don't think this was on yet. Quite pulp-style as per the original request, even tho I suppose it's intended to be a scifi model. But since the idea is just to have the dog...
