Nostalgia

Hi!

I'm starting a new project to collect and paint up some of the miniatures GW released after its golden age.

I love the old school stuff they did in the 80s but its getting to be out of my price range so I have decided to instead start painting and collecting some of the figures that were released when I first started wargaming in the early to mid 90s, specifically for 2nd edition 40k.

Yes there are some real stinkers in the range (anyone remember the plastics that were released in the 2nd edition 40k box set?) but there are also lots of lovely miniatures that can be found for almost nothing compared to the price of the more classic figures.

I've so far had a rummage through my lead pile (sadly this didn't take too long as I had to sell almost my entire collection several years back) but did find 30 metal Catachan jungle fighters to start the project with!

I also plan on keeping an eye on Ebay and so on for any bargains that might appear!

More information can be found on my blog:

Great idea! Looking forward to your first painted models. If you'd like I can dig into my own leadpile to see if I have some spare 2nd Edition models.

Hi!

Thanks for the comments!

That would be great although my gaming budget is severely limited at the mo!

All the best!

I've been doing something similar recently, digging out Rogue Trader and all of the 2nd edition codices that I have.

Hi!

I know it has a reputation for being hero heavy but I genuinely think that the 2nd edition was the most fun. Maybe I'm looking at it through rose tinted glasses but I played lots of games of it while at high school and have a hankering for some old school (for me anyway) GW.

I must admit I doubt I will play the game as is as I don't have enough space or the inclination to paint up whole armies but think I may combine 2nd edition with Necromunda so I can play skirmishes with a few models a side.

All the best!

Excellent stuff :). I agree that 2nd ed was a cool game but the points values were crazy... it was certainly more geared towards skirmish. I have my box up in the attic with all the Codex books... but I got rid of the miniatures because they were not very inspiring.

I think that the metal Catachans are some of the best IG miniatures to date... so much so, I have a few myself:

I stupidly collected them to the small Catachan mini-codex... now long defunct... so I had to re-adjust them to fit in with the standard IG codex (That meant re-marking a lot of units :( ).

I am looking forward to seeing what you do with yours.

(and because they were painted a long time ago, I was in my red-stoney bases with a gloss varnish stage).
