2nd Edition 40k Project! New Pics Added 21st June!
« on: June 03, 2012, 08:47:05 AM »
Hi!

I've started a bit of a nostalgic Warhammer 40000 2nd edition project and heres the first of the Imperial Guard I have painted:

The thinking behind the project is that I would love to collect and paint old school miniatures like many others but I just can't afford to spend the pennies on getting them so have set my sights on the later period of Citadel from when I first started collecting miniatures, the early 90s.

It was an era of bright paint jobs and terrible plastics (anyone remember the stuff that cam with the 40k box set?) but there were some lovely metal figures released at the time and I am slowly working my way through what I have before starting the search for more!

More pictures can be found on my blog:

All the best!

They look really good. I have many, many great memories from back then playing 2nd ed. It's probably the most fun I've had with 40k ever, the rules might have been easy to misuse but man we had fun doing it. I'll definitely follow this.

Great stuff - figures like those were what first got me  into wargaming!

Those paintjobs look better than most of the figs I remember from back then. For being the grim dark future the stuff was sure super bright and colorful and the painting standard was...less than now. It's amazing how much better those metals are than the plastic versions of the same figs. All the stuff from back then just had a certain built in character and charm to them that is lacking in a lot of the current line. The quality has gone up dramatically, especially in the plastics, but it just has a completely different feel to how they used to. How big of an army are you going for?

Hi!

Thanks for the comments!

At present I think I am going to settle for a re-enforced platoon with 1 command squad, three squads of infantry and an assortment of other bits and bobs.

I just dont have the space (or indeed money) to get any more and it will probably take me months to get them all painted as it is!

Vehicle wise, I suspect I will end up with a Chimera for my command squad and some sentinels too (I plan on using the old Kryomek ones as I prefer them!)

As they are all going to be doubling for Warzone Capitol Megacorp troops I think I may get a jetbike or landspeeder too to act as Great Greys...

All the best!

Lovely!

I've also been walking down the 2nd ed road now and again. A completely random game, but a lot of fun too. (although the close combat system is a mess)

Great stuff, I shall follow you blog with interest.

I guess it depends of your age and when you first got into the hobby, but I think of 2nd ed 40k more as 'Middle School' than 'Old School'  ;) Then again, there are probably people here who regard Rogue Trader as the new kid on the block!

Good luck!

Hi!

Thanks for the comments folks!

I am busily working on getting the rest of the Catachan squad painted up so I can have a bash at playing some small scale skirmishes using a cross between Necromunda and 40k!

Alas all my scenery is 15mm or 6mm scale at present so I am also feverishly working on getting some scenics put together for my forces to fight over!

I've also been looking at the discussion over on the fantasy board about 2nd and 3rd edition Fantasy Battle and what folks like about it and posted a similar article about 2nd edition over on my blog:

Please feel free to take a peek at my ramblings!

All the best!

Hi!

I loved the Blood Beret miniatures and had a squad myself back in the day!

Heres the latest addition to my Imperial Catachans:

A sergeant to lead first squad. Now I need to paint up the remaining three guardsmen and the heavy weapon team.

I do think I have got a bit carried away with the project, especially as I don't actually have any space to play any games let alone store them properly! Still I am rather enjoying the task!

All the best!

Great stuff! I started in the 90s as well and your paint jobs really make these models shine, well done! I do like the bright red touches, very 'red period' GW 8)

For Necromunda/40k rules I can recommend Inquisimunda, we're playing it here too and its great fun! It has got rules for Imperial Guard Kill Teams in there as well. You can see my Squat smuggler gang here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=42339.0

Cool project, looking forward to more. The metal Catachans are hands down better than the plastics in my opinion.

I'm preparing to paint up a second edition force of Battle Sisters. I had a pretty nice group of them back in the old days, and sold it off. After some difficulty, and more money than I wanted to spend, I acquired the same models and plan to recreate the group :)
