Just out of curiosity....

Alright , I admit I'm thinking about the Rif wars!

Which 28mm figures would any of you recommend for 1900-1930s' Berbers?
I'm afraid Askari is out as they are way too small in comparison with the Anglian gems or Brigade.
Thanks guys!

I have those Unfeasibly Tuaregs, and they are even more slight than Askari figures. Their slim (realistic) proportions and quite small size make the Askari figures look positively big and butch by comparison. So if Askari are no good to you then they won't be either.

Me, I'm quite happy to mix all kinds of '28s' together. It doesn't really bother me.

Really not quite what you want, but Foundry's turbaned  Bashi-Bazouks (Crimean War range) are part of the overstock sale and are quite reasonably priced.
The GW LOTR Harad are quite ok, but not sufficiently Berber, I dare say.

Yes, the Redoubt figures are positive giants but somehow I like 'em.

Not for the Berbers though as they would simply dwarf my poor Anglians and Brigade figures.

How about Old Glory? ANyone familiar with their Arabs?

The Old Glory arabs are very nice and would fit well with Brigade miniatures.

I am also of the opinion that all sizes of 28's mix well! :)

To be honest, I don't care much if the figures differ a bit, but a Mauser rifle that is twice the scale as the next one does bother me a bit.

That is the biggest obstacle to mixing figures from various manufacturers.  Why doesn't someone simply design a set of weapons and equipment that would be available for use by any designer on their figures? That way it wouldn't matter if one figure was 25mm or 28mm or even 30mm, they would still be in scale with each other.  A Mauser is a Mauser is a Mauser, whether you're 5'4" or 6'6".

It is not so easy as sculpting is a matter of proportion and not directly of the actual height of the mini.

To make it a bit clearer to non-scupltors: When you compare e.g. Dixon and Ral Partha miniatures you will find that they are about the same true scale 25's. But you definitely wouldn't want to mix them in one unit even if one can assume that people are always of different physiological proportions - thin, athletic, strongly built or fat.

When you now compare the thickness of the weapons, here especially the fire-weapons then you see as well the difference. The rifle in Tom Meier's Colonial range are far more delicate than the Dixon ones. Now imagine you would exchange the weapons between the different sculpts. They would look out of place/scale.

Another example are Mark Copplestone's superb sculpts. When I worked with him at his place where he generously gave me "shelter, food and the knowledge of some unknown tricks of the trade" whilst doing the Foundry Aztecs he explained to me that he makes the weapon sculpts about 30%bigger than to "height" scale. And it looks right. Now imagine a Copplestone Askari with a Tom Meier rifle.... You know what I mean now?

The above said is no intention to judge on any approach to scale/proportions - I have loads of Copplestone and even more loads of Ral Partha minis. Seen as separate ranges and originating from different sculpting philosophies they all are great in their own right.

Being in the mini-business myself I can judge and honour the efforts of sculptors. And there are a lot of very good chaps out there who do a marvellous job even if their ranges can't be mixed.

Hope this helped a bit in understanding why the approach of "internationally standardized weapons for miniatures" probably wouldn't work although it is a good idea.

Cheers

Irregular have these, on the small side possibly and not everyone is a fan of the sculpting style.

I have just finished these figures for Blaze Away miniatures.
They are 28mm too, so maybe slighter and less bulky than the figures you mentioned as I am not familiar with them.

Here is the link to their website, although they are a new company and not up and running yet.

The Arabs aren't on their website yet as I have only just finished them.

Cheers,
Ian.
