Moth the Ion Age - Horisont 2012
« on: June 07, 2012, 06:53:14 PM »
For this years Horisont in Esbjerg (Denmark), I will be bringing several projects, one of them will be Moth from Alternative Armies.

Since I have almost no terrain I can use I decided to start doing some in good time.

And since the Ion Age miniatures have a very oldschool look I decided to do some cacti like the 40K 2nd edition Death World Cacti.

This is what we managed to do for today.

Materials.

I made two bases and my wife made one (which had a bit more savage look than mine  :o )

And since my camera was out, and you are probably wondering what Moth and Ion Age is, I took a photo of my three first finished miniatures.

Cool start, looking forward to more models and seeing the cacti finished :)

Horisont is the last weekend of November each year :)

More info here: http://www.horisontesbjerg.dk/

I have run into a problem with the cacti, the air drying modeling clay has not dryed over night, so I guess I have to wait a few days before moving onto next stage.

And slowly there is some progress...

I used some chinchilla sand and tile adhesive to make some texture on the cacti.

Painting them dark green base coulour.

Heavy drybrushing with some OOP goblin green.

Red spikes (of course).

And some sand on the base and they are done.

Since I finished one more model, we get another group shot.

You might have noticed that I haven't painted the bases of the cacti, but this is going to wait untill I do the boards and get some paint for that, so they can have the same sand colour as the board.

very nice! You put the ret in retro! And the ro too, to avoid sillyness... ;D

They work really well with the Ion Age minis. Must be the abundance of old school images floating in my head, but they just, well, fit... 8)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Nice cacti mate.

You could have added a third db tone to it of super yellow green (necrosomething cryx green!?) to give it a bit more life but, well, guess you gotta stop somewhere. Or maybe it's just part of the whole retro thing to have them a bit on the duller side of things.

Anyway looking forward to seeing where you're going with all of this. I'm thinking about painting the goblins in orange brown skins.. would that be a disaster you think?!  lol

Orange/Brown goblins would probably work fine, it works fine on Hobgoblins, so why not on these?

Anyway, I think I have such a yellow green paint somewhere, but I don't know if I will use it, I am mostly satisfied by how they turned out so far. I might try it on a test cactus at some point though, I could always go back and add it to these if it looks better.

A minor update, I have been building a bit more terrain

The new terrain shown with the cacti I already did.

They are made from some seed capsules I bought cheap after Christmas some years ago and never used for anything, before now.

I used my hotglue gun and glued them to some cd's and also added a small cactus to one of the bases.

When I have added sand to the bases and painted the bases they are done, I don't think the capsules need paint.

Maybe I will add some smaller plants, I need to raid a petstore for some aquarium plants.

Yet another inspiring project! I do like the retro look, it's making me want to return to my own alien scenery collection and add some cacti. I already have some paper balls left over from before on various sizes. I'm doing some alien stuff for my Spice Lice this weekend hopefully so maybe I'll take the plunge :)

They are easy to make and useful for many things, I plan to use them with Moth, 40K second edition, Fantasy games, VSF on Venus and probably much more.

The hardest part (for me) was waiting several days for the modeling clay to dry, I was expecting it to dry over night, but it took 2-3 days before it was ready for next stage.

Luckily I have plenty of projects going on, so I had lot of other things to work on while I was waiting.

The old school look is pretty cool.  The scenery and the miniatures are lovely- plus they don't look too serious/drastic styled like the majority of stuff does today.

Out of interest; which rule set would you use for playing something like this?

Cheers
Andy
