If you want to get in the Prof's good books you should post a review of 'Tip and Run' and tell us what you thought of it. I have this book and have been promising to do so for about a year. Luckily for me Alex seems to be a patient man.

I was slightly put off because the book jacket promises to tell the story of the Great War in Africa, but when I started reading it the author announced it was the story of East Africa only. That wasn't quite what I had in mind so I put it down again.

I will get round to reading it sooner or later.

Somewhere in the 'Latest Book...' topic on the general boards is a whole section of books posted about WWI Africa. I'll post the link in a bit, but I can't stop to look for it now.

Whilst Poly goes to look up his list, here are a couple to get you started:

Mimi and Toutou go Forth, by Giles Foden.  Story of Commander Spicer-Simson and his expedition to move two motorboats from Britain to Lake Tangayika, then take on the might of the Imperial German Navy.  You couldn't make this stuff up, it is so improbable.

Byron Farwell's Great War in Africa is a good read as well.

I've read the Giles Foden book under the title "Mimi and Toutou's Big Adventure."  It's great fun.

I second the referral to Farwell's "Great War in Africa."

"Battle for the Bundu" is an excellent book concentrating on East Africa.

The L-59 adventure is something worth looking for.  I've got a book on Zepelins at war which has a chapter on the L-59.

If you read German then there is a lot of material online at the website schutzetrupe.de and others.

This is the topic I was thinking of:
http://forum.backofbeyond.de/viewtopic.php?t=1646&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=120

At the bottom of this page Helen shows off her large collection of books on the Great War in Africa (all of it, not just German East), it carries on for four pages or so, and then I add a couple at the end.

Hopefully you might find something in there that's useful to you.

Okay, let's try this:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=1646.120

This is the part of the topic where it started (last post on the bottom of the page), but the first of Helen's picture links appear to be broken. But the ones on subsequent pages are fine. Just keep following it for four pages or so. There is other stuff mixed in there too because it is the "Latest book received" topic.

Thanks Dylan for the headsup! It's now fixed 8)
Best wishes,

Hi there Von,

Please use this link below as a measure of dedication by Bushfighter on East Africa. Please take your time to scroll though the pages and witness the amount of work that this man has provided to us folks who have an interest in this campaign:

There are other subjects on East Africa in this forum under "Other theatres."

"My Reminiscences of East Africa" by General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck (Published by Battery Press) is also very highly recommended. I don't think any recent author has as full an understanding of the campaign, at least from the German side, as Lettow himself...
