French Battalion: number of flag
« on: July 13, 2012, 08:13:47 AM »
He,
I bought from Front Rank "Battalion Pack" one French Napoleonic Line Infantry, in which there are 24 miniatures, including 2 Standard-bearer.
In this site:
http://napolun.com/mirror/web2.airmail.net/napoleon/infantry_Napoleon.html # frencheagles

dedicated to Napoleon's army, I read that every French battalion had only one flag.
May it be that Front Rank has made a mistake?
May it be due to the fact that instead of the British Battalions continued to have the two flags (colonel and ordnance)?

Please, someone could confirm that the French Napoleonic Battalion had one flag only?
Or rather he's right Front Rank, and they had two?

Thank you.

How many flags were displayed can be a bit of a debate, sure is that (though not all) most French battallions had only 1 eagle to which the flag was attached.
The battalions/regiments that didn't receive an eagle displayed a flag anyway, just not topped with the eagle.
Most flagbearers were accompanied by some protectors which were carrying some kind of pole with an axe-like thingie on top (exact name escapes me now) maybe you can convert him into one of those.

Btw, my French battalions only have one flag. Only my British and my Russians have 2.

Please, could you tell me if Austrians and Prussians battalions have one or two flags?

The Front Rank battalion packs are designed to be used as either one 24 figure battalion or two 12 figure units, hence the two officers and two standard bearers.

There was indeed only one flag per battalion in the French army. Each individual battalion within a regiment had its own eagle and tricolour flag between 1804 and 1812, normally carried by a senior NCO (porte-aigle) escorted by two porte-aigles-adjoints, usually known as the second and third porte-aigles. These two worthies were armed with spoontoons and a brace of pistols and were supposed to defend the colour to the death.

An imperial decree dated December 25 1811 changed the distribution of colours in the French army, although it was't fully implemented until after the Russian campaign. Each infantry regiment only had one tricolour flag and eagle-topped standard pole carried by a junior officer rather than an NCO : this colour was now carried by the regiment's first battalion, the second and third (and sometimes fourth, fifth and sixth) battalions only receiving a plain square coloured fanion. The fanion was white for the second battalion, red for the third, blue for the 4th, green for the 5th and yellow for the 6th.

Many thanks also to you for the clarification.
Now I understand why Front Rank puts two Standard-bearerer in the Battalion Pack.
As for me, since I use it to represent a battalion of 24 figures, I'll have to remember to order an additional Trooper, by putting in place of the second Standard-bearer, in the case of the French.
Cheers,
