Billingsdale Manor (or really big non-manorly house!)
« on: February 24, 2008, 09:42:34 PM »
If some of you may recall, at various conventions I run a series of Gloire games centered around the English Civil War.  One of the personalities of my games has been Lord Billingsdale, a rather corrupt Parliamentarian who's more interested in lining his pocket than serving Cromwell's cause.  My games have taken place in the town of LaVale, modeled with the always excellent Pardulon buildings.  The one downside of this is that the Pardulon building are not very large.  They are fine scale wise and are perfect for standard houses, but lack in the size department for a good scrum using multiple models.  With that in mind I built the following for Lord Billingsdale. It's built in the style of Pardulon and I even painted it the same, but the building is roughly 6" long and 8".  The interior has built in stairs for the inevitable multi-story sword clashing.  The light source for the pictures is a little wonky, but otherwise they turned out fine.  I've rather proud of my efforts.  Thanks.

I really like it as a piece of model work, but to my mind it isn't big or fancy enough to be called a manor house.

Here's some pics of manors near me, ranging from small:

To massive:

Don't get me wrong, you've built a lovely piece of kit there, but surely that's just one of the outbuildings? You simply must now build a proper-sized job now you have called it a manor.  :)

Oh no! I just noticed that that Mike Snorbens fellow said the same thing on TMP! All he ever does is post criticisms of other people's posts, corrects them or tells them how wrong they are and how they should be using a different operating system and internet browser!

I don't want to be like him. I take it all back. It's perfect in every way!  :)

Thanks all. You're right of course, it's more of a big house than manor.  Don't blame though. The locals are a down-trodden lot and call anything bigger than a stable a manor.

I like it, It has a touch of the Bastle house about it which would have had Reiver Lords living in them

Yes, after my rash comments earlier, I got to thinking that it wouldn't be out of place as the residence of a Lord of the poor, impoverished and benighted North Country border regions.

Not everyone can live in the greener, pleasanter parts of the Green and Pleasant Land, somebody has to work the Dark Satanic Mills after all!  :)

 Have at you sir for that slur on the Riding familys of gods green and pleasant land I shall gather the families and be riding hot Trod into the Welsh Marches for such a slight

The only thing that would make it a nice target is that the upper storey would burn ever so nicley

Christ, look at how thick the walls are on that Bastle house. I could make that out of 1" pink foam and it'd be in scale.

Poly, your manors are lovely and their lines and styles are aped endlessly by home builders here (my wife's parents' old house looked was faux-Tudor), but Joey's has the extra virtue of fitting on a Gloire board.  :)

Also Lowtardog, the branch of Murrays from which I descend were exiled to Ireland during one of the period deportations of riding families. The current Laird Murray will let us wear the tartan, but we have to put the belt around our crest to show we're not "really" Murrays.

Bastard. I should steal his cattle.

I have been listening to this book by our goodly author Fraeser, very similar to Pyrates

havent seen the book though which is strange

Sorry for hyjacking the thread Deathwing but if you part with 6 border cattle I would be glad to return it to you

I think the house is spot on, if you wanted you could (this is only a suggestion) build alternative upper sections for Reiving and even make it into a Pele Tower, now theres pretty :D

I've seen the book. It was in my local Waterstones and I gave it to my brother as a Christmas present. He has had better luck with non-Flashman Fraser than me, as the only one of that ilk that I whole-heartedly enjoyed was "Black Ajax" (and that has Flashy's dad in it, so I'm not sure it even counts as 'not a Flashy').

Upon receiving it, he told me he had almost bought it as a gift for me. If as you say it is like "The Pyrates" then I'm glad he didn't, as I thought that a truly terrible book.

It is a bit anachronistic in content, so if you dont like Pyrates I can understand it not being your "thang" but some of the characters are very well done. What clinched it for me is the lentgh of the audio - 8 hours which took me through my round trip by road  to Glasgow the other week :D  that and the narrator could do accents very well.
