Hey... out of interest, have you been speaking to Kestrel of the Revs pirates recently? He was talking about an idea when he was at MacLAM that's quite similar to this...

Stunning work as usual. I love how prolific you are. Your games always look as though they're great fun!

Cheers
Andy

Some great ideas you have come up with.
A fine job on the Arena. Looks good.
Maybe seeing what you have done will get me to work on my guys.

Great stuff as always. Here's a weird question. I have Red Sand/Blue Sky, but I must have an older version than everybody else. The version everyone else seems to have involves area movement, while mine has inches and the game seems overcomplex to me to be getting all the praise. Do I have an old version? Its marked 2003.

You've got the old one. The new uses a grid. Great for running a ludus in a campaign, but the actual game play gets tedious quickly. Sameish short bouts, over and over.

I'm writing my own gladiator rules anyway because I enjoy such things :)

It staggers me how quickly you complete your projects, and to such a high standard too.

That's very kind but there's not much to this one. A dozen or so figures and three simple buildings don't really make for much work :)

Well, here we are again.
The 'year of getting stuff done' continues with an upgrade to my Gladiator project.
As was pointed out above, Red Sand, Blue Sky got very stale very quickly and, when I compiled a list of my games at the beginning of this year, the gladiators were scheduled for eBay because I thought an arena fighting game like this didn't have any legs.

However...

There were some things in its favour. it's very portable, the amount of stuff you need for a game is minimal and I really liked the gladiators that I'd painted. I'd also bought a load of painted gladiators of LeadAsbestos and it would be a shame to just flog them on unused.

After looking around I decided that Jugula was the game to try. I stumped up for a rule book and 4 sets of cards so all my friends (and maybe the students at school) could join in and the gladiators were saved (yay!). A quick grid added to the arena and we're good to go.

Here are LeadAsbestos' old miniatures

and here are mine

There's more on the project page:

This isn't the only project I'm sorting out in 2015. There are threads on the others here:

Glad to see the gang get some attention. I hope you are successful in finding a fun time playing a gladiator game, as I just haven't found one I like the feel of yet.

Jugula looks like it will be ok. I'll find out soon enough I guess :)
