Spartan Games bring Firestorm universe to the ground
« on: August 17, 2012, 05:52:43 AM »
It was longer in coming than I expected, actually, but then they got involved with that Dystopian Wars thingamajick in the meanwhile...
http://www.studiosparta.co.uk/Articles.asp?ID=250

Looks like they are going for scales accross the spectrum from the get-go...

Given the way they have outlined the "phases", I expect they will be moving really slowly with making any of the bigger stuff in 28mm tho -– I would expect it to be an almost-infantry-only thing, at least initially.

Of the smaller scales, 10 and 15 are rather close to each other so one has to wonder a bit about how that's going to work. Perhaps they have a cunning caper planned that I don't immediately get.

Thanks, tnjrp, but there's already a thread about this:

Hmm, I thought that thread was about Dystopian Wars -related 28mm stuff... Firestorm universe is a separate one and not a VSF universe AFAIK either.

Ah! My apologies.

This is definitely sci-fi so should be in the future wars section...

Looks interesting, though I can't help but thinking that's quite a mouthful to start upon for a relatively small company with thrre naval type games then moving into various scales in VSF and Sci-fi. Can they pull it off?
But those tanks linked to do look rather nice and 10mm has a lot of benefits when tackling larger engagements, so it's nice to see someone trying to scale the size of the engagements with the scale of miniatures.

They do have a lot on their plate, apparently, what with the new scale VSF stuff from Steve F's linky. IIRC they were going to come out with a new fleet for Firestorm Armada as well in the very near future. Maybe they don't want to be small anymore o_o

If they bring out some of those tanks in 28mm at a reasonable price, I may well spontaneously combust.

I bet it will just be troops in 28mm... but there you go.

Well it says spec ops, can't see tanks coming into that category really, but its always a possibility.

Maybe not tanks... but I bet they could come up with some equally interesting buggies or armoured cars... or even small drop-ships...

... but they'll probably just stick to troops :(

Yes dropships! Everyone needs some of them. Might be worth writing to them and offering to playtest if they're serious about it.

Just noticed at the bottom of their 'whats coming page' past the fantasy stuff, there are a bunch of 15mm sci fi renders sitting around. They look very interesting.

Actually all of this isn't coming from spartan games but rather studio sparta. An quick read trough doesn't exactly reveal the distinction between the two besides studio being for the wilder and less canonical idea's their sculptors and writers have. A good example are the invaders, Martian tripod models made for dystopian wars but kept outside the actual storyline of that game.

In a way I am getting Forgeword or Specialist Games like vibe from studio sparta, make of that what you will.

Yes, I'm afraid that I was fooled by its temporary relocation to VSF.

I do wonder about doing this in 10mm and 15mm and 28mm.  I can see 10mm for battles and 28mm for skirmishes as a combination, or just opting for 15mm as a compromise for both; but going with all three seems to risk fragmenting their potential market too much (as well as making for a hugely ambitious release schedule if Spartan are to keep up momentum and interest).

I don't believe that any of the ranges will be extensive first of, but rather they will get all the basics out and then slowly expand. Some people will probably be more interested in the 10mm than 15mm or 28mm and vice versa. 15mm is a winner unto itself because there is already a big market for it and 15mm gamers may pitch in. I think the 10mm may be touch and go, they'll need to place more emphasis on it since its a fairly unusual scale.
