My take on Spartacus
« on: September 02, 2012, 04:14:25 PM »
Hi,

Just thought I’d like to post some photos of my Spartacus collection.

The figures are a bit dated now and could do with touching up in places.

As well as the usual slaves and Romans, theres a  very serious looking Roman commander, Spartacus and his companions and Crixus plus a Senior Centurion (who seems to have fidgeted just as the camera clicked)

Cheers

Really nice, dipped I suppose?

Are those miniatures from Foundry? Beautiful sculpts!

Hi

They are Wargames Foundry figures with many conversions amongst the slaves (head swaps and shield changes etc).

I didn't use dips (they were painted well before the invention of 'dips') -  I used washes of (brown) ink in various strenth dilutions - I haven't yet chanced a dip.

I like 'dirty' looking figures

I've been attempting for 10 years to get some shield transfers for the Romans.

Thanks

The 'Hollywood' roller is made from an unassembled Redoubt Enterprises abatis (a spare one that I did not need for the Alamo) - with the branches wrapped around a few real twigs.

Thanks

A wonderful collection. I really like some of the slave conversions. ;D

Ahh, the REAL Spartacus! I feared to encounter some bodybuilders in ridiculous fencing stances. :D Your take on this topic works much better, well done.

Cheers Nick,

Most of them were just simple (if time consuming) head swaps and luckily the figures come with separate shields and (mostly) weapons - which helped.

Thanks - No Doc - my collection is purely historical/fantasy instead of fantasy/historical (OK except for the 'roller'). I've got some Slave cavalry (but forgot to photo them for some reason) and I have a last unit (until the next one) of Romans (unarmoured legionaries) to paint.

I need some 'Roman' cavalry but am struggling to find a suitable figure - I don't really want Gauls.

I think you are familiar with Aventine's "Classical" range? Which is actually a remnant of Mr Copplestone's work for Foundry/Companion.
For cavalry take a look at this manufacturer's Republican Roman range. They might be a tad too early but will fit match Foundry figures quite well.

Hi Poiter50,

I have used converted German cavalry for the Slaves but I'm (along with Allen Curtis, amongst others) are not sure/convinced that 'foreign' troops would have been used in Italy in the Spartacus revolt. Xenophobia was rife and I don't know if the Romans would have risked it.

Hi Doc,

I've seen the Aventine and am eyeing up some of the RR figures - for the scale of games I do, a 6 man 'Equites' detachment will be sufficent.

I'm just waiting for my e-bay boat to come in.
