Thoughts on using different scale aircraft to troops
« on: September 04, 2012, 11:04:34 AM »
Hi

Two things prompted this question.  Firstly the Black Hawk helicopter models available for £2.99 at newsagents - how well would they fit with my 28mm figs.

Secondly, seeing a WW2 game at the club last night with ship models much smaller scale than the attacking aircraft, which looked perfectly OK.

I suppose it is all a matter of perspective

Any thoughts?

I've only ever tried it with a 1/144 Hind helicopter above 15mm troops. Most of my other games require landed (or crashed) choppers alongside 28mm figures, where a 1/72 one would look out of place.

with low flyers like helicopters the scale does stand out and needs to be correct or very close  ,if high flyers like bombers are on high stands then you can get away with a bigger scale but i think smaller looks odd.

It's largely a taste thing I suppose and what looks right to you. Where aircraft are on the ground, it might look a tad odd if the aircraft model is way bigger than the vehicles and troops, but if they are a flying 'token' (after all, how long would it take a modern jet, or even helicopter, to pass over a battlefield, even in 6mm?), then it isn't so important.

A 1/72nd scale F-100 is just over 8" long, while a 1/48th scale one would be 12.5" long (1/100th would be 6"). Presuming we are talking 28mm figures, then it should be around the 10" mark. A CH-34 Choctaw is 14" (1/48), 9.5" (1/72) and a touch under 7" (1/100), while for 28mm figures it should be around 12". A Blackhawk is 16" at 1/48th and the model on the magazine looks easily the almost 11" it is supposed to be at 1/72. The measurements are largely meaningless sat here, but when you see the size of the models themselves, space becomes an issue and 1/48th models look very big when we're talking modern aircraft.

Not ruling out this idea for the future but have decided against for the moment

For my 15mm I use 1:144 fixed wing and 1:100 helos.

The difficulty is finding 1:100 helos...

I use 1/72 Altaya planes with my BF Evolution figures (little 28mm). Even landed, they are HUGE. My helicopters are 1/55 to 1/64 but alas, soviet ones are only in 1/72 on the market(except UNIMAX HIND which is 1/64 and impossible to find).

1/72 plane with Lead Adventure Miniatures (the real plane is a beast but I think 1/72 mix pretty well with "big" 28mm)

"little 28mm" Megaminiatures conversion with 1/72 helicopter (EASY MODEL)

1/72 on the left on the road, 1/55 to 1/64 (the little bird) on the right

1/72 over my gaming table (120 cm X 200 cm, each green square [junction hidden under the road] is 30X30)
A word for miniatures, scenery and rules compulsive buying ? Zhobbyllness !

I'm using mine with the BEvo figures, they are slim 25mm figures and 1/72 pre-paints are cheap and easy.  It is, after all, your game. How much time do you want to spend on helos?

I think 1/72 scale aircraft work pretty darn well with 28mm figures. Then again what size "28mm" figures are you using. Modern troops from Mongrel or TAG wouldn't look too bad. Chronoscope characters or USX figures from RAFM would look like the Incredible Hulk next to a 1/72 helo.

While the toys/models look perfectly fine for gaming purposes...remember the scale is wildly off.  :D  The Mig-31 Foxbat is a freakin' monster!
 :o

Cool lookin' models btw.
