What to use for Hyborian Peoples?
« on: July 08, 2020, 07:58:04 AM »
I've been thinking on Hyboria (aka the world of Conan the Barbarian) and what should be used for each of the Hyborian peoples.

Some rough ideas:
  • Aesir / Vanir - Vikings / barbarians. Preferably horned.
  • Argosians - Greeks.
  • Aquilonians - Romans or possibly sub-Romans / Romano-Brits.
  • Cimmerians - Celts?
  • Hyrkanians - Huns.
  • Picts - Primitives.
  • Stygians - Egyptians?
  • Vendhyans - Indians.

I'm getting my inspiration from: https://hyboria.xoth.net/gazetteer/nations.htm

One of the things I'm considering is that when Howard says "knights" he doesn't mean "medieval knights". He means Roman equites or similar mounted cavalry.

I'm mostly thinking of doing this at 15mm for skirmish in Hyboria. Does anyone have any thoughts on these or the ones that I'm missing?

I've pondered this and in my mind this is how I see the world.
I don't think knights, necessarily means knights in shining armour, this could be mounted troops or cataphracts.

Have been campaigning in Hyboria for a while with 15mm figures and using HOTT. It is a great world for gaming in.

Exactly. Like Glorantha where it had "knights" but they've switched that to mounted cavalry.

I'd like to play HotT but I'm spiritually opposed to multi-basing. :(

I don't find it too bad with 15mm figures but you could always use Sabot bases.

It's probably more of a 28mm thing, but I find that HotT works really well with individually based figures. I call it MicroHotT, though "MacroHotT" might be more appropriate because you have so many units on the table. I keep the same number of PIPs (1d6) and find that works just fine.
