Strangely drawn to Back of Beyond ..
« on: November 01, 2012, 07:31:55 AM »
I've been keeping an eye on this era since i took part in a mutli-player game at the club when 5 x factions [British, Chinese, French, German and Russians] were all trying to take a point on the table but with different and secret objectives.

I used British who were commanded by a certain Harry Flashman VC's grandson. The old boy's spirit lives on. He double crossed the French  contingent :D

So, i have a hanckering to start Warlord Chinese or possibly White Russians.

But where to start Gentlemen?

Copplestone looks odds on.

Also, could you suggest reading material specifically on the Warlords?

Many thanks

James

For Figures-Copplestone and Pulp Figures.

For reading, there's biography of One-Arm Sutton that includes his various adventures with the warlords.  Its excellent, especially the fight at the mortar factory.

There's also a biography of Two-Gun Cohen that's not quite as good lol  It has, among many other things, his adventures in warlord China

I can dig out the titles when I get home tonight it you wish.

Peter Hopkirk's Setting The East Ablaze has a chapter or two on a warlord, but be warned-that book only leads you deeper in to the Back of Beyond- lol It SHOULD tempt you into adding Reds, British, tribesmen etc

Yup, slippery slope though.  Consider yourself warned.  ;)

While I have your attention, I might also recommend Ignatieff's rules of the same name.  I've been trying them out and they work really well (for me at least) for large multi-faction games on large tables.  YMMV

Gentlemen,

While i'm waiting for the books where is a good place to start with buying figures for WL Chinese? HQ and, say, a couple of large units of Regular Infantry. Students look interesting as do Dare to Die troops (of course)

Thanks
James

I am at exactly the same stage as you have reached and am about to embark into the BoB with a Chinese Warlord Army.  I favour Copplestone Castings. Link:

They have some excellent figures which cover most requirements and even include some White Russians which allows some spin off later.

Another range is Pulp Figures who have a range of Chinese including some variations on command figures, MGs (Hotchkiss) and some Tong Gangs which might add some colourful if unreliable allies. Link:

Thanks for that chap. I'm thinking 1920s

Do you know if Pulp have a stockist in the UK?

Cheers

As far as I can tell there is no UK stockist, however all the forums speak very highly of his turn around time and postage service.  Most suggest between 2 days and a week for delivery with the odd parcel taking two weeks.  His postage charges are very reasonable although the figures themselves are more expensive that Copplestone.
