No really; we have reliable rifles and very sharp entrenching tools. :D

I shall read the book after seeing the film as no doubt the book will be better.

The movie could be absolutely fantastic... just not the story from the book (as it would seem).

Regardless, I do love me some big budget Zombies. Just PLEASE don't be I Am Legend.

I've read the book which is cracking and I'll watch the film which looks great. What I wont do is draw much of connection between the two and that way things will be less complicated and my blood pressure will stay low.
Don't!

Brad Pitt vs Zombies?? GO ZOMBIES!!!

That ain't fiction. At the rate Angelina is deteriorating, she probably already qualifies as a zombie.  ::)

Its because in the book there are certain attributes of the zombies that key parts of the book are based on including the survival guide. Yet the movie seems to ignore it.

I've not read the books either, so is this a case of paying for the rights to a well established name and ignoring what made the books so well liked? When did the fast zombie become so de rigueur? I get the whole rage virus thing in 28 Days but isn't it contrary to the whole undead corpse ethos? Forgive my zombie tunnel vision!  :D

What I find most interesting about the book...is that it is a "History" book...it is written after the war by a man who collects the stories of survivors from all over the globe....The book is little snippets...or vignettes of what was happening all over the World thru out the war.  I agree with one of the above posters that this would be a wonderful Mini Series...each episode could have been a few of these short stories...or one of the longer ones...would have been excellent.

This film obviously has to place Brad in all of this snippets and puts it in real time which ruins the whole feel and arch of the story...the fast zombie thing is another example that changes the whole jist of the thing.

So...I'll see the movie...but I will try to do as suggested above and mentally divorce it from the book...so I can lower my expectations and not ruin the rare trip to the movies.

Cheers,

Blue

I've never understood the hankering for the slow Romero type zombie much. People seem to have a problem with a zombie running citing rigor mortis and such, yet never take issue with them being strong enough to tear a torso in two or pull a head clean off!

Fast zombies, or Zoombies, are "de rigeur" because willing suspension of disbelief no longer allows for the worlds militarise to be defeated by anything which would lose a race with an asthmatic ant carrying heavy shopping

so I guess the question is, are they really zombies? Or are they plague victims? I never bought into the 28 days later, rage zombie. Becase they are not dead. There just really, Really, REALLY! Mad.  >:(
No less scary mind you. But they can at least bleed out.
And I did like 28 days/ 28 weeks later. They will, just never be zombies to me.

'Zoombies'! Like it   :D

That's actually a very good point about slower zombies perhaps not being viewed as sufficiently threatning to modern audiences. I still like them shambling though!

The thing that disappointed me the most about the trailer is simply the format change. The book, as Blue said, was done in little short-stories as part of a book, giving the actual book the sub-title "The Oral History of the Zombie Wars." I love the idea of a mini-series, although I do feel that doing it in a mock documentary style with interviews would have been fantastic as well. Sadly, we'll probably just see Brad Pitt running around as some former Delta Force superninja slaying zombies left and right, so I'll just turn my brain off and enjoy the eye candy. :)

As for slow vs fast, I don't mind either, although I do think that slow suits WWZ better simply because the terror of the zombies that the author was trying to convey was simply that their sheer inhumanity was their greatest weapon, which was why the Battle of Yonkers was such a big deal. The fact that they're a massive, slow, inexorable tide of walking death that will never stop no matter how many you blow to smithereens makes them, in my mind, that much more terrifying than runners which are scary mostly (to me) because well... they're fast and up in your grill haha. It's a gradual horrifying conclusion you come to watching it happen rather than a sudden "Ahh get away from me!" scare which is much more proximate and less horrifying.

Anyway, that's my .02. I've been a longtime lurker, so hi everyone! :)
