IIRC some of the Chinese DoD figures came with seperate swords... maybe that's the same here

They certainly look like they are seperate but the straps etc are on the figure, I suppose you could have rifles slung on their backs instead.

I'll be honest it's not an area I know a huge amount about but it seems an odd thing to put on them. While it does a good job of saying "these are BoB figures" it alienates them from anything else. I'm sure some russian troops did pick up big heavy chinese swords, but I would expect the majority to have held on to their sabres as a point of pride, particularly if they've managed to keep their uniforms in good condition.... I find it hard to believe there were whole units/whetever that decided to take up that sword.

This is true...especially when you take into consideration that the Chinese swords in question were poor quality and badly counterweighted compared with say the Russian Shaska or other sabres.
