The backpacks be separate items yes? I've been contemplating these.

Yes they're multi part and had I not been so enthusiastic I'd have painted seperatly first. There's a seperate whole body, a head, the backpack and two pieces with arms joined to the weapon, and there's a choice of two weapons per figure. They've just released another pair as well.
