"28mm Undead Pirate Crew Customizations"

Hi All,

I've been enjoying some miniatures work on a 28mm undead pirate crew. I've used 28mm undead pirates from Black Cat Minis, Reaper, GW, and others. My current batch of figures are nearly 100% customized.

You can find photos at my blog here:

http://6mm-minis.blogspot.com/2008/03/mini-wargaming-28mm-undead-pirate-crew.html

I'd love to hear constructive feedback or about your similar 28mm pirates work.

Positive vibes to all!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Very nice. Just ordered the new skeleton pirates from Bronze Age - so I'll see how they compare.

Like the bases too. What other alternatives are there available?

G'day,
Very nice and clean conversions there Maksim - cant wait to see them painted and aboard their ship (the one in ur blog, is it for them?)
I just wanted to know how tall the minis from reaper are and how do they compare with historical brands like foundry, artizan...
Uti, when u get them can u post some pics - the Jack Sparrow and Barbossa look like cool models to have.
As for other skeletal pirates the best ones (to me) look like the moonlight minis ones, they have a loot of character and look like crisp sculpts. I have the Eureka ones:

They also do these zombie pirates but four of them are pretty much the same sculpt and arent that impressive, the unique on is quite nice though

Aside from that i know fenryll produce a couple...are there any more guys?
Old Glory's Ghostly pirates look alright but i much prefer skellies.
Does anybody have the Black Cutlass from old glory? Is it suitably evil for an undead crew?

Cheers, 8)

The Reaper ones are tall, closer to 30mm. They match rather well with the Moonlight 28's in size.

There's a German company "Ziterdes" that makes skeletal pirates that will fit more with Foundry/Aritzan in scale:

I did have the OG pirates, they are a mixed bunch, some are lovely and remind me of the 50 fathoms sculpts whilst others are dodgy. The good thing is that you only get around 4-5 repeated figures so quite a wide range of pirates

Like those Eureka skeletons.  Thanks for posting the pictures!  Would have probably ordered them a while back but Eureka doesn't list them for sale individually.  If I ordered all 10 would Eureka make sure that I got one of each pose?

I had the Old Glory "Black Cutlass" and two of the 10 gun brigs at one time.  I decided to sell or trade them.  Two of my friends ended up with the 10 gun brigs and painted them up.  They look great.  The "Black Cutlass" will look even better when my other friend paints that up.  The reason I unloaded my collection of these was that deck space was just too tight to be fighting brawls with 28mm figures on bases that measured 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter.  So I've bought bigger plastic toys to replace those Old Glory ships.  However, if you just want a ship to fight gun duels or to sit off a port and bombard the place, or just to be scenery, the Old Glory ships are great.

For a good ship to use with skeletal or undead pirates, I suggest the Mega Bloks "Flying Dutchman."  It requires some work to get rid of the little Lego like bumps, and these need to be decked over.  But this is a great spooky looking ship toy.  It's a good size for based 28mm figures.  It's nearly waterlined, for those who care about that (I'm content to not waterline toy plastic ships).  And it's reasonably cheap for all the stuff you get in the box, including masts and ethereal looking sails.

New from Bronze age

COOL!  I believe I'm the one who suggested to Dave Soderquist that he try his hand at sculpting some skeletal pirates.  Now that he's actually done it, I'm under an absolute obligation to buy!

Bronze Age Minis is an excellent little company that produces some fun stuff.

Nic at Eureka generally tries to provide at least one of each variant before giving you any repeats.  The Pirate skeletons are relatively new - the older ones were multipart models - a bit of a nuisance to assemble.  The new ones are somewhat more robust.  Looking on the Eureka website, they are listed as being for sale individually:

Eureka's models are available individually but if u say order six, then im pretty sure that he'll just pick six random ones himself (if you write him a very nice email though he might comply) if u order ten then u will get the full set.
The only problem ive had was when i ordered the full set of turkish pirates one was missed out (the one with the polearm upright) which was annoying as i particularly wanted to make him into a flag bearer, since ive put in two orders for him with a message saying which one i wanted (i ordered these through a hobby shop and i believe the message was passed on) but so far ive just recieved two more copies of one i already had.
warrenbruhn, thanx for the input and after studying the picture on their website ive decided against the Black Cutlass and although ive seen some great lego/megablocks ships done im more inclined towards buying (or making if i find time) one like the eureka pirate ship and modifying it to suit undead.
Oh, and the butcher/chef undead pirate by Ziterdes is classic

Hi Guys,

One manufacturer I see missing from our list is Moonlight Minis... the sculpts are less realistic than some, but they have plenty of character.

Shalom,

Here's another one for you guys
http://www.coolminiornot.com/store/product.php?xProd=2644&xSec=68
they are beautifully detailed Bob Olley sculpts, with very fine resin casts. The downside is they are bloody huge being about 35mm high, a good head taller that my other reaper undead pirates, except for the old Kazig figure (also reaper), which being by the same sculptor is an exact match for height.

Also they have rather average looking cast on bases, the admiral looking one on a 25mm square base and the other 2 on 20mm square. They should be easy to cut off though so I can put them on some decking bases.
