Calling dutch (or European) casters. Newbie needs help.
« on: December 27, 2012, 11:49:21 AM »
So, I'm looking to get into casting. All of it, metal, plaster and resin.
But most websites I find (and I might be looking in the wrong corners of the web), while giving great advice on what to do, lack one main thing:
What do I get and where do I get it.
Which leads me to the following questions, to which I'll appreciate any answer's:

What do I get and where do I get the proper mould and casting materials for
1-metal (miniatures casting)
2-Resin (detailed scenery, maybe some bigger models)
3-Plaster (scenery I need a lot of).

I'm mainly looking for 'where to get it advice' from the Netherlands/Europe because I prefer not to order from the US or Canada or anything.
But any helpful advice/good website from around the world is welcome off course.

THanks.

There is a good outline of what is involved with metal casting on the Mould Maker website http://cart.themouldmaker.com/index.php?p=page&page_id=Articles

Having all the kit is one thing, learning how to use it is another.  Anyone can cut a mould but it takes skill and experience to do it right.

Not the cheapest by any stretch but Tiranti in London sell a lot of the gear and is possibly a good starting point to see what is available.

If you want to talk to a caster I would recomend Dave Hoyle at Museum Miniatures.

http://www.museumminiatures.co.uk/

He has been casting & mouldmaking for decades - both for himself and on contract -he used to make adtillery moulds for Peter Gilder.
He has a vulcanising press for moulds.
I realise it's not the Netherlands, but he is pretty close to Hull (where the North Sea Ferries run) if you need to meet him face-to-face, and he has visited some of the European shows in the past.

I'm not sure what kind of casting method you are going to use but for gravity casting you can use the following for making a mold:
http://www.hazelaar.nl/product/1340808283. This company also sells white metal (at least they did 15 years ago..... :D) and the equipment needed.

2-Resin (detailed scenery, maybe some bigger models)

For moldmaking: http://www.polyservice.nl/Siliconenrubber-c-276.html
For casting: http://www.polyservice.nl/Harsen-c-265.html (I don't know what you like to cast but PS114 and PS115 should be suitable; please read which one is best suited for you).

3-Plaster (scenery I need a lot of)
Mold material: maybe latex or rubber. You can look around on the sites mentioned by 1 and 2.
Dental plaster is the hardest plaster and best suited; http://www.zwolsmangips.nl/mambo/index.php?option=com_phpshop&page=shop.browse&category_id=43&Itemid=337

Come to think of it: perhaps you should take a good look around on the site of "De Hazelaar". I wouldn't be surprised if they have the materials for your 3 casting questions.

Thanks all. Now I have something I can work with.
Now I just need the finances in order and get experimenting.
