Help needed with decorating building corners
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:59:50 PM »
Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by creating a sub thread to a current build thread I've already got on the go but need some general advice.

I'm looking for ideas to decorate the corners of the pub I'm building. The gaps are 10mm in height and 6mm at the widest width. Pics:

I was intending just to cut corner sections of the cornices already in place but then thought there is the opportunity to put something a bit more decorative in there. My first thought is gargoyles, seeing as the Victorians liked a bit of Gothic. Not sure where I would find anything that small though.

Any other ideas?

Don't!

Shot yourself in the foot with that one mate as most details like that would be the mitred cornice.

You could use a fantasy figures head as a gargoyle and just mount it on a block that fills the space. What might help is to really fill the details with paint so it doesn't look like a figure if that makes sense.

These are the back corners, right?

For later 19th century I would probably suggest a square fascia box that protudes slightly above the fascia molding and has a finial, either a round/pinecone shaped one or some sort of animal on top and a 3/4 finial on the bottom.

Alternatively would be a brick and steel spire.

Reaper have some familiars that might suit to mount on a projecting beam/cornice.

I'm thinking I might have.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, I'll follow the ideas and see what I come up with.

What about those cool falcon heads they always use in comic books?

That being said this building is light years beyond anything I could do.  It's
Pretty spectacular.

Do you have any of the original moulding left?

You could cut a square section at 45 degree angles to fit...not sure that makes sense of what I am trying to say.

Original moulding   > <   Original moulding
                          ^
                  New part here.

Hope that makes some sort of sense...

Cheers Oldben, that's another idea to look into.

Mason, perfect sense matey. That's what I was going to do but I was thinking of maybe something different before I sign the build off.

Especially for the back corners, I figure meeting up the cornices would be the most natural solution.

But I have to ask; what's up with the drainpipe in the first picture? Are you planning another floor on top of these?

Do that the idea of a Gargoyle etc doesn't seem right for a pub or similar building.

Agree with the man here, especially as the build is based on a pub in Peckham.
A fancy gargoyle would not last five minutes there....

Cornerstones.  Square blocks in the same style as the cornice, not the estate agents as we only use Milestone Residential on LAF  ;D

Conventional it is then.

Daeothar, the pipe in the first picture is a soil pipe and therefore needs a vent (usually that just meant running the pipe above the roof line), you can see the junction pipe to the toilet just below the window. Here's a pic to sort of give you the idea:
