Random Sci Fi Factions
« on: January 02, 2013, 11:36:29 AM »
Hello.

I thought I'd start a thread where I can stick all the Sci fi minis that may one day get incorporated into some kind of all incompassing setting.

As yet, I've just got a very general idea for some kind of hard SciFi, Alienesque/Blade Runnery schinnanigans, so we'll see where it goes.

I'm also gonna need a rule set. At the moment I'm leaning towards  AE Bounty for small gang based confrontations, (although I don't know that much about it,) and maybe Tomorrows War for some lager scale head to heads.
Any ideas would be most welcome.

So first up are the white coats.
They will be used mainly as objectives, i.e escort them out/assasinate them sort of thing.
The minis are the moonfleet scientists. A bit of an exercise in turd polishing unfortunatley, so I kept it simple. They are also on the small side, but not to worry.

Next up are these three chaps. I see them as either detectives or perhaps corporate enforcers/body guards or professional assasins, so they'll probably see a lot of use. Two of the minis are from East Riding, the other is the 'not Deckard' from Rezolution.

Hopefully there'll be more to follow in the not too distant future.

Since you asked... Use Defiance: Vital Ground and you'll only need that one set of rules 8)

It's more or less geared for "platoon sized" or so IMCO but works for smaller force sizes as well.

On the subject of the games you mentioned, I can't give the former a thumbs-up personally tho (obviously) some people do swear by it. I'm sure there are generic (even free) rulesets that work better for small forces actions. No idea about how the latter plays really, but if you've played it before and like it then I suppose it's better to go with it than to switch.

Umm... Are you saying they are bad minis or what? I've been thinking of getting them at some point.. ???

That sounds like you actively don't like it, what is it that put you off?

Yes, IMO by today's standards they are poor, if I had had seen the casts in hand before I bought them, I wouldn't have bothered. Plus they don't scale well next to most other sci fi minis, being true 28mm.
They are very cheap however and they fill a gap for which there aren't that many options.

AE Bounty is decent enough, I quite like it although some of the gear isn't that balanced if you're after a competative game and the crew building system can get a little awkward if you have something very specific in mind, but still probably the best system for small scale skirmishes.
You can also try Goal system (or their Blasters and Bulkheads), I'd also suggest Rogue Trader as I have a fondness for it, or Crimson Dust if you can get the guy to send you a copy  ::) Crimson Dust is a little like goal system in it's basic mechanics, but has more depth and detail, which makes it in my opinion better, but then again I am biased ;)

Well, for one it uncomfortably stradles the gap between a true open/generic and a closed game so it's really neither fish nor fowl. And from what it gives open access to, it manages to procude huge balance issues. Less of a problem if you are playing with a GM but that person needs run a pretty tight ship in order to avoid "catastrophes". The core rules themselves aren't anything remarkable one way or the other tho perhaps a bit overtly reliant on suppression as opposed to actually killing off people.

The size is not so much an issue for me as I have a lot of "fairly true 28mm" stuff. Given the price, I wasn't expecting premium quality but it's still a bit sad if they quite sub-par.

Love the detectives. I've got the ex-Moonfleet scientists myself. My biggest issue with them was pinheaditis. At some point I plan to replace the heads with some Hasslefree spare heads.

Nice painting!  :o

For me the biggest decision on the ruleset is do you want/need a point system or not?  Lots of options either way, but you gotta decide on that first.

If I was going without point values, I'd probably pick 5150 Star Army for skirmish.

If you want point values Defiance would be very cool system, and I agree it can handle both skirmish and larger unit based action.  The rules do have a lot of crunch though.  If you aren't the type that wants to roll up the sleeves and dive into a complex set of rules, you might not like the amount of time that will be required to design all your factions, units, weapons etc... but if you are the type you will have a lot of fun with it.  Our group ended up steering clear of this, just because it was going to be too complicated for some to use - but oh the options it has!

I'd also be tempted to use Infinity and do a lot of "this counts as this".  IMHO infinity is an awesome sci-fi skirmish game, but I can't see how it would scale up to unit based combat very well.

Victory Decision Planetfall will be the generic set of rules I use for unit based combat.  Not sure if it could be used for skirmish.

Do keep us posted with more pictures of minis and what rules you end up going with!

I have some of those nova corps troops for some time, and haven't ever thought they looked that good, but your paint job definitely makes me want to go back and take another look at them.

Very cool scheme.

It's incredible what a fantastic paint job can do for what I thought were 'mediocre' minis.

Just love your style, and love this thread.

Some really nice painting there. Ganesha Games' Flying Lead is my system of choice for future skirmish.
