Short, fat, round and full of teeth.
« on: January 08, 2013, 03:48:48 AM »
I've been starting up an army of goblins but gw's squig prices are ridiculous so I thout I'd make some of my own. Here's the first one. Ill make some basic molds of these myself and make some resin casts. They should be considerably cheaper than GW after making half a dozen or so. I plan on making a lot more than half a dozen though. :)
Ill probably make a few different variations. So far it still needs a little work on its feet. I'm wondering if I should leave it eyeless or not. If I gave it eyes they would be a coupe of beady little ones right at the front. Also wondering about texture, I'm thinking either just leaving it smooth or putting some slate like crusts on it in a bit of a line down the back.

Also started on an otyugh a while ago, but now I think I'll just make it a big squig. Here's a pic of that, really early days, just the teeth and gums done with a dodgy picture.

Thanks.

Here's the progress so far.

The smaller guy is done, ill probably add a basing tab so its easier to base.
The larger guy has had six eyes and some skin texture done. This one will probably end up being a great cave squig.

Legs and tail to do on this guy. Ill cast a bunch of the big guy and attach two together to make mangler squigs. $nz110 for a 65 point miniature is a bit ridiculous. Damn GW. My wife thinks it looks like a scary mutant tadpole  lol and she's right too.

Be sure to post the final models all painted up. GW do know what to charge these days don't they!

They sure do. And I sure will post up the completed ones. Paint jobs should be rather easy.  :)

Here's the latest progress

Lots more to do on the legs still and the tail. Then I'll be cutting it up. Ding the inside of the mouth and then casting it.

Next pics in the WIP
Some texture on the top. This was mostly a test to see if it looked good. I like it so ill keep it and extend it further down the tail once I finish the tail. I plan on doing the legs first before the tail. One leg is nearly finished as you can see in the second pic.

Comments welcome :D

I'm also thinking of making a mole of spikes so that I can make each one I cast look different in a small way.

These are looking good, a friendly observation; I noticed a couple of fingerprint and nail marks, try to be careful about removing them. They take away a lot from what would otherwise be some very good pieces!

I am watching and waiting for more of your progress!  :)

I've chopped it up. Added some more detail. Detailed inside the mouth as well.  Even put in a uvula (I think that's the name of the dangly bit at the back of the mouth)
After chopping I filled in some of the gappy areas that the saw removed.
Late on today I'll be making a mold and then casting up a few. I'll also make up some spiky bits to give a bit of variation between them. I'll be using them for warhammer so some of them will be mounts, others will be attached together with chains and made into manglers.

The join

And moulded and cast.

Here's a pic with the mold opened up.

That is with 25ml of resin mix. So that includes the spruce I made out of balsa wood and the reservoir at the top where I pour it in. I'm making another one now with only 20ml of resin and there is still a bit of wastage in the reservoir. But of i only use 20ml each time then I should be able to make roughly 50 of these guys out of the litre containers of resin. And at $78 + $15 postage so lets just say $100 for the resin that works out at about $2 a mini (plus the almost $60 of pinkysil in the mold of course, so about $4 a mini) sure beats gw's prices even though its not quite their calibre of sculpting.
Nt too much out the sides either.

I have four ready and waiting base coats, I'm thinking either pale flesh or green.

Put together and painted. Ill fill in some of the gaps. They weren't as obvious before painting and paint the base later. Then I'll put it on the fantasy board.
