Sky Martian enclave ** 95% complete, good pics on page two **
« on: February 17, 2013, 12:28:19 AM »
To accompany our Martian figures it seemed about time to have a home for them  :)

There will be a proper write up on the Red Planet blog as to the whys and wherefores of Sky Martian dwellings but for now I'll post a couple of pictures of the cliff homes for them...

First off, a simple blue foam construction with carved styrations showing the different layers in the rock

And then primed with some Martians for scale.

The Martians use clefts in the rock face that lead further into the cliff but a dock of sorts is needed for the skiffs to offload, onload. A simple framework is built first.

And then planked using thin, randomly cut balsa.

Supporting structure shown.

The rock and structure has yet to be painted. There will also be awnings over the two higher entrances to provide an elegant of shelter.

Quite a simple build and I might even get it finished tomorrow (today)  :)

cheers

Great start James!! You might find some inspiration from the 2002 version of 'The Time Machine'. The Eloi village was built into the cliffs.....

'Fraid not  lol

Andy, where did you find that picture  ??? I searched for an age looking for one.

It lives in the attic and only just fits through the little hole in the ceiling  lol

Should get it done today...

You DO know that crack about 'lazy git' was all huff. You accomplish more in one post than I in... in... *small voice* ...ever.  :'(

As it's vertical and shallow, I assumed you'd just hang it on the wall.  ;)

Does the Time Machine image suggest overhang to you? Interesting in cliff dwellings.

Good gods, man - you were supposed to be taking it easy!

Besides, shouldn't you finish something before making another piece to sit beside the wizard's tower?

Like the walls of New Victoria?

Seriously, though, love what you are doing here.

(Darth Vader voice on!)'The Google-foo is strong in this one' (Darth Vader voice off)

Only kidding. Type 'Time Machine Eloi' into google(other all-powerful search engines are available!) and its some of the first pics you get.

Finished yet? ;)

Thanks chaps :)

I am lazy, most of the time. Just every now and then I get an attack of mojo.

I took it easy for three days last week and it was driving me crazy not doing anything  lol The eye is pretty much back to normal now so I can crack on.

The wizards tower is coming along nicely and when I've finished the stone work I'll dig up the thread and post  :D

The walls of New Victoria are coming along a pace and there's not that many more to do, just the viaduct  ::) lol

I really couldn't find any images of it when I last looked a couple of weeks ago  :?

Finished yet? ;)

95% there, see below  :D

First coats of paint went on this afternoon and I went for a similar colour scheme to the New Victoria stone work (as this is the rock that it's quarried from).

The platforms were thin balsa strip unevenly cut and stuck on in a sort of haphazard way.

Various inks and washes were added to the rock to give variations in tone, not that over the top but enough to break the colour up somewhat. The platform was painted pale brown and inked and drybrushed in the normal way but some of the planks were given two or three coats of ink to make them look less uniform.

A few areas of sand were added to small recesses to simulate the wind. I didn't want to go too over the top with this as I wasn't really sure how it would turn out, seems OK though  :)
Some simple plants were added to break up the hard stone and dead looking grass was stuck on the base edges (no photos of this but similar to the station mesa in my other Mars thread).

And now a few shots of the whole thing almost complete. There's only the entrance covers to put on, a few pots or jars by the entrances and some small bits of thread to hang off various parts of the platform. No reason behind these apart from dressing and making it look a bit better.

Once again, my camera skills are somewhat to be desired but you get the idea  :)

I might take some this evening after dinner using my desk lamps.

cheers

James

Looking good James. When will there be skiffs to dock with it?
